Highways Operative – Tunbridge Wells, Kent
About the Role
Oakstone Contracting are looking for an experienced Highways Operative to join our team working on a Section 278 highway improvement scheme in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced highways operative with a good understanding of highway construction and reinstatement. The successful candidate will work as part of a small site team carrying out a range of highway improvement works.
The role is Monday to Friday during daytime working hours, with no routine requirement for night or weekend working.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out general highways and civil engineering works.
- Installation of kerbs, edgings and associated concrete works.
- Construction of new footways and cycleways.
- Carrying out excavation, preparation and backfilling works.
- Assisting with drainage installation and associated groundworks.
- Carrying out highway surfacing and reinstatement works.
- Preparing areas for asphalt and other surface finishes.
- Working to drawings, specifications and site levels.
- Operating small plant and equipment where suitably trained and authorised.
- Working safely around existing underground services.
- Working within traffic management and highway closures.
- Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working area.
- Working effectively as part of the Oakstone site team.
- Following RAMS, site procedures and all health and safety requirements.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience working within highways/civil engineering.
- Demonstrable experience in kerbing and edging.
- Experience of footway and carriageway construction.
- Experience of general groundworks and highway reinstatement.
- Good understanding of working safely within highway environments.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a small team.
- Reliable and punctual approach to work.
- Good attitude towards health and safety.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- NRSWA qualifications.
- CSCS or relevant highways/civil engineering qualifications - Must have
- Relevant plant tickets.
- Previous experience working on Section 278 highway schemes.
- Experience with drainage, paving and asphalt works.
- Experience working within traffic management.
Working Hours
The role will be based on Monday to Friday daytime working hours, in line with the project's agreed working arrangements.
There is no planned requirement for routine night shifts, although occasional flexibility may be beneficial should the project programme or client requirements change.
Travel & Transport
The primary work location is Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
Ideally, the successful candidate will be able to make their own way to site each day. This can be reflected in the agreed rate of pay.
Alternatively, where required, an Oakstone company vehicle/shared van can be provided to facilitate travel to and from site.

Pay: £170.00-£200.00 per day
