Flowcheck is a growing family‑run business providing specialist flow measurement and environmental compliance services to UK water utilities and industrial sites. We survey, test and verify flow and spill monitoring systems to ensure they meet the required environmental standards.
We’re looking for a Trainee Environmental Compliance Engineer who wants to build a long‑term career and progress to becoming a fully qualified MCERTS Inspector.
The Role
MCERTS is the Environment Agency’s certification scheme for environmental monitoring. The role of an MCERTS Inspector is to independently assess flow and spill monitoring systems to ensure they meet the required standards and provide accurate, reliable emissions data.
This is a hands‑on, varied role combining practical engineering, site work, problem‑solving, data analysis and technical reporting. You’ll work with experienced MCERTS Inspectors and develop the skills needed to independently assess flow and spill monitoring systems.
You will:
- Assist with site assessments, flowmeter verification and calibration checks
- Travel to water, wastewater and industrial sites across the UK
- Use specialist portable flow equipment for surveys and performance testing
- Take accurate measurements and review flow data
- Contribute to technical inspection reports
- Build the skills required to achieve MCERTS certification
About You
We’re looking for someone who wants to build a long‑term career in this specialist field with our company. This role involves significant training and development, so you must be genuinely motivated to grow with the business and progress to full MCERTS Inspector status over the coming years.
Ideally you have:
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- Strong numerical ability (A‑level maths or similar)
- Good analytical and problem‑solving skills
- Interest in instrumentation and practical engineering
- Strong attention to detail
- Good written and verbal communication
- Confidence using Excel and Word
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Full clean UK driving licence
- Willingness to travel and stay overnight
- Comfortable working outdoors and on operational sites (training provided)
Experience in flow measurement, instrumentation, engineering or the water industry is desirable but not essential.
Training & Progression
You’ll receive structured training in:
- Closed‑pipe and open‑channel flow measurement
- Flowmeter verification and diagnostics
- Site surveying and portable equipment
- Data analysis, uncertainty assessment and reporting
- MCERTS requirements and environmental compliance
- Confined‑space, working‑at‑height and site safety
As your competence develops, you’ll take on more responsibility and progress to full MCERTS Inspector status.

You’ll work closely with experienced engineers, learn the full process from site work to reporting, and play an important role in a small, supportive team. Hours are typically 8:30–5pm Monday to Friday, with some early starts and overnight stays depending on site locations.
