About the role
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Business Development Lead to take ownership of business development and help drive the next stage of our growth.
This is a hands-on role within a growing technical and professional services consultancy. You will identify and develop new opportunities, build client relationships, lead sales conversations and coordinate proposals and tenders through to successful award. You will need to quickly understand our technical capabilities, uncover client needs and work with our consultants and specialists to shape compelling solutions. We are looking for someone who can step into a growing business, bring structure and momentum to business development and personally make things happen.
Key responsibilities
Business development and sales
- Develop and implement a focused business development strategy
- Proactively identify new clients, projects, frameworks and partnership opportunities
- Build relationships with key decision-makers across target sectors
- Lead introductory meetings, capability discussions and sales presentations
- Understand client challenges and work with technical colleagues to shape appropriate solutions
- Develop existing accounts and identify opportunities for repeat and expanded work
- Represent the business at relevant industry events and networking opportunities
- Work closely with our marketing team to coordinate on specific campaigns and materials
Bids and tenders
- Own the bid and proposal process from opportunity through to submission
- Identify and monitor relevant tender and framework opportunities
- Coordinate bid/no-bid decisions and submission programmes
- Develop high-quality proposals and tender responses using input from technical specialists
- Maintain and improve case studies, credentials and standard bid content
- Review outcomes and continuously improve our approach and win rate
Pipeline and performance
- Establish and maintain a structured CRM and sales pipeline
- Actively progress opportunities and maintain momentum throughout the sales process
- Provide clear forecasting and reporting to the leadership team
- Monitor pipeline value, conversion, new opportunities and revenue performance
What we are looking for
We are particularly interested in someone with experience selling professional, consultancy, engineering or technical services, where understanding the client's challenge and shaping the right solution is fundamental to winning work. You do not need to be an expert in our technical disciplines from day one, but you must be curious, a quick learner and able to develop enough understanding to have credible conversations with clients.
Ideally, you will have:
- Strong B2B business development experience within professional or technical/engineering services
- A track record of proactively generating and winning new business
- Strong consultative selling and relationship-building skills
- Experience managing proposals, bids and formal tenders
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong commercial awareness
- Experience managing CRM, pipelines and sales forecasts
- An understanding of how sales and marketing work together
- The ability to understand technical information and translate it into clear client propositions
Experience within engineering, asset management, infrastructure, utilities, manufacturing, energy or similar sectors would be advantageous but is not essential.
The person
We are looking for someone who is hands-on, commercially curious and self-motivated. You will be comfortable finding opportunities, making introductions, leading meetings, developing proposals and following up personally.
This is an opportunity to help build and shape the business development function within a growing consultancy. You will need to bring ideas, structure and energy, while working closely with our leadership and technical teams to turn opportunities into long-term client relationships.
Measures of success
Success will be measured through the quality and value of the sales pipeline, new opportunities and client relationships generated, proposal and tender conversion, new client wins, revenue growth and the effectiveness of targeted marketing activity.
Pay: £45,000.00-£55,000.00 per year
