Position Overview
Moa Basketball (https://moabasketball.co.uk/) is looking for an enthusiastic, warm and engaging coach to lead our Wee Moas programme for children aged 4–6 in Glasgow.
This is a specialist early-years coaching role. The successful candidate will be confident working with very young children and able to create sessions that are fun, energetic, structured and age-appropriate, while introducing children to basketball through games, movement and play.
We are particularly interested in someone with genuine experience working with children aged 4–6. You do not need to be an elite basketball player: experience engaging and managing very young children is more important than advanced basketball knowledge.
About Wee Moas
Wee Moas is Moa Basketball's programme for our youngest participants. Sessions use basketball, movement, coordination activities, imaginative play and simple challenges to introduce children to the sport and develop confidence, physical literacy and teamwork.
Wee Moas sessions are not traditional basketball practices. The emphasis is on making children active, engaged and successful while gradually developing familiarity with the ball, hoops and basic basketball movements.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver fun, engaging and age-appropriate basketball sessions for children aged 4–6.
- Use games, movement, imaginative play and simple challenges to introduce basketball fundamentals.
- Create a warm, positive and inclusive environment in which every child feels encouraged.
- Adapt activities to different confidence levels, attention spans, personalities and abilities.
- Keep children actively involved and minimise queues, waiting and lengthy explanations.
- Use positive reinforcement and celebrate effort, participation and small successes.
- Maintain a safe and well-organised session environment.
- Build positive relationships with children and communicate confidently and professionally with parents.
- Arrive prepared, punctual and ready to deliver the session independently.
- Contribute ideas to the ongoing development of the Wee Moas programme as it grows.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Demonstrated experience working with children aged approximately 4–6.
- Experience in children's sports, early-years education, nursery settings, children's activities or a similar environment.
- Excellent communication skills with very young children.
- Ability to engage and positively manage a small group of young children independently.
- A warm, energetic, patient and encouraging coaching style.
- Ability to adapt quickly when an activity is not working or children lose interest.
- Genuine enthusiasm for helping young children develop confidence and enjoy physical activity.
- PVG Scheme membership or eligibility for PVG membership.
- Reliability, professionalism and a strong commitment to safeguarding and children's wellbeing.
Desirable Experience & Qualifications
- Basketball playing or coaching experience.
- Experience coaching another children's sport such as football, gymnastics, athletics, swimming, dance or martial arts.
- Early-years education, nursery or childcare experience.
- Sports coaching qualification.
- First Aid qualification or relevant safeguarding training.
The Person We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will genuinely enjoy working with young children and be comfortable being energetic, playful and creative. They should be able to turn a simple basketball activity into an engaging game and maintain children's attention without relying on lengthy instructions or formal discipline.
We are looking for someone who can make a group of four-year-olds feel excited about coming to basketball every week.
A Development Opportunity
This is an opportunity to take an important role in developing and expanding Moa Basketball's Wee Moas programme. The successful coach will initially lead existing sessions, with the potential to take on additional sessions as the programme grows.
For the right person, there may also be opportunities to contribute to session plans and help establish a consistent Wee Moas coaching programme that can eventually be delivered by other coaches.
Contract & Compensation
- Freelance, part-time position.
- £20.00 per hour.
- Flexible schedule, with sessions delivered in person in Glasgow.
- Potential for an ongoing collaboration as the Wee Moas programme develops.
- Initial 1-month probationary period.
