Job Title: Maintenance Person
Location: Residential Care Home
Reports To: Home Manager
Hours: Part-time
Job Purpose
To ensure the care home's buildings, equipment, and grounds are maintained to a safe, clean, and high standard, providing a secure and comfortable environment for residents, staff, and visitors. The Maintenance Person will carry out routine maintenance, minor repairs, health and safety checks, and liaise with external contractors when specialist work is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and routine inspections throughout the home.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and repair faults where appropriate.
- Perform basic plumbing, carpentry, decorating, electrical (non-certified), and general building repairs.
- Maintain heating, lighting, ventilation, and water systems, reporting any defects.
- Ensure the grounds, gardens, pathways, and car parks are kept clean, safe, and well maintained.
- Complete regular safety checks, including:
- Fire alarms and emergency lighting (where trained).
- Fire doors and escape routes.
- Water temperature monitoring.
- Window restrictors and door security.
- Ensure all maintenance records, inspection logs, and compliance documentation are completed accurately.
- Support statutory inspections and assist contractors during servicing of equipment.
- Monitor maintenance stock and order materials with approval.
- Dispose of waste safely and responsibly.
- Assist with room preparation for new admissions.
- Support emergency repairs outside normal working hours where agreed.
- Promote a safe working environment by following all health and safety procedures.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Comply with all Health and Safety legislation and company policies.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Report hazards, accidents, and defects immediately.
- Ensure tools and equipment are maintained safely.
- Carry out risk assessments where required.
- Maintain COSHH compliance for any substances used.
Person Specification
- Experience in building maintenance, facilities management, or a similar maintenance role, preferable.
- Practical skills across a range of maintenance disciplines.
- Good understanding of health and safety legislation.
- Ability to prioritise workloads and work independently.
- Good communication and record-keeping skills.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and professional.
- Physically capable of carrying out manual handling and maintenance tasks..
Desirable
- Previous experience working within a care home, healthcare, or similar environment.
- Knowledge of fire safety, Legionella control, and water hygiene.
- Basic electrical or plumbing qualifications.
- Understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults.

Safeguarding
The postholder has a responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of vulnerable adults. An enhanced DBS check will be required, together with satisfactory references and compliance with all safeguarding policies.
Working Conditions
- Regular walking, lifting, bending, and use of ladders.
- Occasional out-of-hours emergency call-outs (where applicable).
- Exposure to varying weather conditions when maintaining external areas.
- Use of maintenance equipment and power tools in accordance with safe working practices.
Pay: £12.91 per hour
