Location: South Staffordshire, ST19 area (home visits initially, moving to a community location) Hours: Up to 10 hours per week (building up gradually from 2 sessions/week) Rate: £25 - £35 per hour DOE Start Date: ASAP Ideally to meet student this side of Summer ready for September.
About the Role
We're looking for a patient, experienced tutor to support a 13-year-old boy (Year 9, Key Stage 3) who is currently not attending school due to mental health difficulties, including diagnoses of ADHD and severe anxiety. This role combines tuition in English and Maths with a dedicated mentoring session, focused on rebuilding confidence, routine, and an eventual gradual return to school.
This is a relationship-led role — success depends on the tutor's ability to build trust and rapport patiently, working at the young person's pace.
What You'll Be Doing
- Delivering English and Maths tuition (academically able, no specific learning needs — barriers are emotional and attendance-based)
- Running a weekly mentoring session focused on confidence, routine, and reintegration support
- Working flexibly around the young person's needs, including an initial "getting to know you" period with reduced hours
- Supporting a gradual transition from home-based sessions to a community location, and eventually towards school-based delivery
- Maintaining calm, clear, and predictable communication
- Working alongside the guardian, school, and local authority as part of a wider support plan
What We're Looking For
- Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs, ADHD, and/or anxiety
- A calm, warm, and consistent communication style — comfortable with a young person who can find tone and body language hard to read
- Confidence responding to impulsive behaviours (e.g. shouting out, interrupting, walking out) calmly and without escalation
- Patience to build trust over time rather than pushing engagement
- Flexibility with days/times, particularly PM or late-morning availability
- Comfortable around dogs, as there is a family pet in the home
- A male tutor is preferred for this role, as the young person currently lacks male role models
- A tutor of mixed heritage or non-white background is preferred, to support positive role modelling
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)
Nice to Have
- Shared interests such as cooking, anime, gaming, or Jiu Jitsu can help with rapport-building
- Experience working with Looked After Children and understanding of related reporting/consent processes
Why This Role
This is a highly rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference in a young person's life at a pivotal stage, supporting him back towards confidence, routine, and school. Full support and guidance provided by the local authority team throughout the placement.
Apply today if you're a dedicated tutor who can combine strong academic support with empathy, flexibility and encouragement.
