Job Title: Nursery Catering Assistant
10am to 5pm Monday to Friday - all year round. 32.5 hours a week.
Job Purpose
To support the smooth operation of the nursery kitchen by helping the Chef to prepare nutritious meals, maintaining high standards of food hygiene and safety, managing stock, and working collaboratively with staff to ensure the wellbeing of all children. The role also includes supporting the playroom when required and carrying out housekeeping duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve healthy, balanced meals and snacks in line with allergy and dietary requirements and food safety standards.
- Cook and take full responsibility for meal preparation in the absence of the Chef.
- Maintain excellent standards of food hygiene, cleanliness, and kitchen safety in accordance with current regulations.
- Monitor and manage kitchen stock, including checking deliveries, rotating stock, and reporting items requiring replenishment.
- Deliver meal trolleys safely to playrooms and complete handovers with room staff, involving children where appropriate to encourage independence and positive mealtime experiences.
- Complete all required food safety, temperature, cleaning, and mealtime checklists accurately.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues to ensure dietary needs, allergies, and daily requirements are understood and met.
- Safeguard the health, safety, and wellbeing of all children by following nursery safeguarding and health and safety policies at all times.
- Support housekeeping duties, including cleaning kitchen equipment, laundry and other designated areas to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
- Provide support within the playrooms when required, assisting staff with children's activities, routines, and supervision.
- Promote a positive, caring, and inclusive environment for children, families, and colleagues.
- Follow all nursery policies and procedures, including safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety, and food hygiene regulations.
Person Specification
- Food Hygiene Certificate (Level 2 or willingness to obtain).
- Experience in food preparation and cooking, preferably in a childcare, education, or catering environment.
- Knowledge of food allergens and special dietary requirements.
- Good organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexible, reliable, and willing to support different areas of the nursery as required.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
