WHO YOU'D BE SUPPORTING
One young woman of 19, in her own self-contained flat attached to her family's home in BD5. She is autistic, has a severe learning disability and epilepsy, and is partially verbal. She uses single words, gestures and her own signals, and her team knows exactly what each one means. She loves swimming, the trampoline park, being near water, going out in the car with music on, her iPad and headphones, nursery rhymes and dancing.
There is a fixed weekly plan for where she goes each day, with a wet-weather alternative already agreed for every one, because knowing what is coming next is what keeps her settled. She has been supported by Semper Care since 2022 and has strong relationships with a lot of her staff. You would be joining an established team, not starting one.
THE HONEST PART
Her behaviour can be physically challenging. When she becomes heightened she may bite, grab hair, kick, or charge at staff. There is a detailed positive behaviour support plan, a challenging behaviour risk assessment, protective arm guards you put on at the first early warning sign, and a set of authorised breakaway and holding techniques you are trained in before your first shift. We are putting that on the advert rather than saving it for interview, because the people who last in this role are the ones who knew and chose it anyway. What is also true: most of the job is not that. Most of a night is quiet. Hourly checks, a settled bedtime routine, and gently prompting her to use her words. And you are never on your own. Nights run 2:1 as standard with a third member of staff from 10pm to 1am, and her family are in the house next door.
THE SHIFT
10:00pm to 9:00am, waking nights. Not sleep-ins. You stay awake, alert and monitoring for the whole shift, and hourly checks are recorded on time.- 11 hours, up to 3 nights per week on a rota covering all seven.- 2:1 throughout, plus a third carer from 10pm to 1am.- One address in BD5. No travelling between calls, no unpaid mileage.- Handover to the day team at 9am.
WHAT YOU NEED
This role is open to female applicants only. This is a Genuine Occupational Requirement under Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010, because of the intimate personal care involved. Essential:- Paid care or support experience. We cannot take a first care role into this placement, however keen someone is.- Paid, hands-on experience supporting someone whose behaviour is physically challenging. Supported living, residential, complex care, learning disability or autism services. Not an interest in it. Not a placement.- Willing to use authorised physical intervention techniques, and to wear protective arm guards when her behaviour begins to heighten.- Personal care experience.- Able to stay calm, quiet and unhurried at three in the morning, and to follow a routine exactly as it is written even on the nights it feels unnecessary. The consistency is the care.- Right to work in the UK. We do not hold a sponsorship licence. Useful, but we will train you:- Team Teach, MAPA, PROACT-SCIPr or similar physical intervention training- Epilepsy awareness- Medication administration and MAR charts
BEFORE YOUR FIRST SHIFT
You complete Semper Care's physical intervention training and pre-verbal communication training, read her behaviour support plan and risk assessment, and shadow the current team. All of it paid. Nobody goes onto this rota without it.
