Newbury Commercial Glazing Ltd is a well-established, family-run commercial glazing specialist based in Warwick. With over 25 years of experience, we work with commercial, public sector and education clients across the Midlands and beyond.
We are looking for an experienced Financial Controller to take responsibility for the day-to-day financial management of the business. This is a hands-on role that would suit someone who enjoys working in a smaller company environment, taking ownership of the finance function and supporting the Directors with accurate financial information and business administration.
The Role
As the company's Financial Controller, you will take ownership of the finance function while also supporting payroll, HR administration, compliance and general business administration. Working closely with the Directors, you will help ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the business through accurate financial management and effective administrative processes.
This role is ideal for an experienced finance professional who enjoys being involved in both the detail and the bigger picture, working closely with business owners in a practical and supportive capacity.
Key Responsibilities
Finance & Accounting
- Prepare monthly management accounts and financial reports for the Directors.
- Maintain sales ledger, purchase ledger and general ledger activities.
- Process and reconcile supplier invoices and company credit card transactions.
- Manage bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Monitor cash flow and prepare regular cash flow forecasts.
- Manage VAT, PAYE, CIS and other statutory returns.
- Liaise with external accountants during year-end accounts preparation and audit requirements.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
Project & Business Reporting
- Monitor project profitability and work-in-progress.
- Produce regular reports on margins, costs and business performance.
- Support Directors with budgeting and forecasting.
- Assist with analysis of business performance and operational costs.
Payroll, HR & Administration
- Oversee weekly and monthly payroll administration.
- Maintain employee records, contracts and personnel files.
- Support recruitment administration, interview scheduling and new starter onboarding.
- Manage employee inductions and ensure employment documentation is up to date.
- Manage holiday, absence and training records.
- Arrange DBS checks and maintain associated records where required.
- Manage Health & Safety training administration and certification records.
- Assist with HR compliance and liaise with external advisers when required.
- Maintain company records, policies and business documentation.
Compliance & Certifications
- Manage ISO accreditations and industry certifications.
- Maintain Constructionline, CHAS, SafeContractor and similar certifications.
- Manage licence renewals and compliance documentation.
- Support tender and pre-qualification submissions where required.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Support the continued development of business systems and reporting processes.
- Assist with the implementation and ongoing use of Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reporting.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in managing finance within an SME environment.
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of the finance function.
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail.
- Practical and hands-on in their approach.
- Confident communicating with Directors, colleagues, customers and suppliers.
- Experienced in Sage or similar accounting software.
- Familiar with VAT, PAYE and CIS requirements.
Desirable
- AAT qualified, part-qualified, qualified by experience, ACA, ACCA or CIMA.
- Experience within construction, manufacturing or project-based businesses.
- Familiarity with industry accreditations and compliance requirements.
- Experience supporting HR administration within a small or medium-sized business.
- Familiarity with employment documentation, onboarding and general HR compliance.
- Experience of Microsoft Dynamics 365 or similar systems.
