The Community Paediatrician plays a key role in delivering specialist medical care to children and young people with complex health, developmental, and safeguarding needs within community settings.
You will provide clinical assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing management for children with neurodevelopmental conditions, disabilities, and social vulnerability, working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
The role includes responsibility for statutory and safeguarding duties, including child protection medical assessments, looked after children health assessments, and contribution to multi-agency planning. The Community Paediatrician will support delivery of neurodevelopmental pathways (e.g. ASD/ADHD), contribute to reducing waiting times, and ensure high-quality, patient-centred care.
In addition to clinical work, the post holder will provide leadership within the service, supporting service development, quality improvement, and workforce supervision. They will work collaboratively with health, education, and social care partners to ensure integrated care and improved outcomes for children and families.
The role is essential to maintaining safe service provision, meeting statutory requirements, and delivering local and national priorities for children’s services.
A Community Paediatric Consultant provides specialist care for children with complex physical, developmental, and safeguarding needs. The role includes assessing, diagnosing, and managing conditions such as autism, ADHD, learning disability, cerebral palsy, and other neurodevelopmental or chronic health conditions through outpatient and community-based clinics.
The consultant works as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with therapists, psychologists, specialist nurses, education, and social care to deliver coordinated, holistic care. A key responsibility includes contributing to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) by providing detailed medical advice and reports.
Safeguarding is a core aspect of the role, including participation in strategy discussions, case conferences, and the preparation of medico-legal reports where required.
The post also involves clinical leadership, supporting service development and pathway improvements to meet increasing demand. Consultants contribute to teaching and supervision of junior doctors, medical students, and wider staff, ensuring high standards of practice are maintained.
In addition, the role includes participation in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities, ensuring safe, effective, and compliant service delivery across community paediatric services.

This post is mainly based at Broadoaks CDC. The post holder will have full-time secretarial support and access to IT including the Internet. All senior doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and are supported with the revalidation process.
