About Essential
Essential Therapeutic Care & Education provides therapeutic residential care and support for children and young people with complex emotional, behavioural and mental health needs.
Our approach brings together care, clinical thinking and education, helping young people to feel safe, develop meaningful relationships and make sustainable progress.
We are looking for a compassionate and confident Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)to join our clinical team and contribute to the development of high-quality, psychologically informed care across our services.
The Role
This is an opportunity to work differently from a traditional ward-based nursing environment.
As a Mental Health Nurse at Essential, you will work closely with our residential teams, managers, therapists and wider professionals to help us understand and respond to the mental health needs of the young people in our care.
Your role will include:
- Providing mental health assessment, advice and clinical oversight.
- Supporting the development and review of individualised care and risk management plans.
- Contributing to formulation and multidisciplinary clinical discussions.
- Supporting residential teams to understand mental health presentations and respond therapeutically.
- Providing advice around medication, mental health symptoms and changes in presentation.
- Liaising with CAMHS, GPs, social workers and other external professionals.
- Supporting young people to access appropriate mental and physical healthcare.
- Contributing to safeguarding and risk management processes.
- Providing consultation and guidance following incidents or periods of increased concern.
- Supporting reflective practice and learning within residential teams.
- Delivering relevant training and development to team members.
- Maintaining accurate, professional and confidential clinical records.
- Contributing to the ongoing development of Essential's clinical model.
About You
We are looking for someone who can combine strong clinical knowledge with warmth, curiosity and the ability to build relationships.
You will need:
- Current NMC registration as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN).
- Experience supporting people with mental health needs.
- Strong assessment and risk management skills.
- A good understanding of safeguarding.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The confidence to work collaboratively with both clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
- The ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries while developing trusting relationships.
- A reflective and trauma-informed approach to practice.
- The ability to work independently while remaining part of a wider multidisciplinary team.
Experience of CAMHS, children and young people's services, residential childcare, trauma, attachment difficulties or complex presentations would be particularly beneficial, although we are interested in hearing from nurses from a range of mental health backgrounds.
What We Offer
At Essential, we want our clinical team to have the time and space to do meaningful work rather than simply respond to crisis.
You can expect:
- A genuinely therapeutic and relational working environment.
- Regular clinical reflection and multidisciplinary working.
- Ongoing professional development and CPD.
- Supportive leadership and clinical oversight.
- The opportunity to influence how clinical practice develops across our services.
- A varied role with the opportunity to work directly with young people and the teams supporting them.
Why Join Essential?
Residential care can have a significant impact when the adults around a young person share a consistent understanding of what that young person needs.
Our Mental Health Nurses are not there simply to provide clinical advice from the sidelines. They are an important part of helping our teams understand behaviour, identify need, manage risk and provide thoughtful, consistent therapeutic care.
If you are an RMN who wants to use your clinical skills in a role where relationships, reflection and long-term outcomes matter, we would like to hear from you.
