We are looking for a Product Design Engineer to join our existing design team in a full-time, office-based role.
As a Product Design Engineer, you will work alongside other designers, engineers and project staff to design both standard and bespoke products for customers working in radiation environments. You will be part of a team that supports projects from initial enquiry through to design, manufacture, assembly and installation.
You will work on a wide variety of projects, ranging from small, manufactured products through to larger custom installations. This will involve producing 3D models, detailed drawings, bills of materials, costings and supporting documentation.
You will also work closely with the wider business, including sales, production, machining, fabrication, assembly, installation teams, suppliers and customers. The role requires good communication and teamwork, as designs often need input from multiple departments to make sure they are practical, accurate and suitable for manufacture.
This is a hands-on design role suited to someone who enjoys problem solving, practical engineering and working as part of a team to see designs progress from concept through to manufacture.
- Working as part of the design team to create 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings using Autodesk Inventor such as part production and fabrication/assembly drawings.
- Designing standard and bespoke radiation shielding products based on customer requirements.
- Producing accurate bills of materials, costings and supporting documentation.
- Working with the Sales Manager and other team members to provide technical input for quotations and proposals.
- Liaising with customers to clarify requirements and ensure designs meet the intended use.
- Communicating and collaborating with the shopfloor to support machining, fabrication, welding, assembly and installation.
- Reviewing existing products and supporting design changes, product refinements and continuous improvement.
- Following internal procedures and working within the company’s ISO 9001 quality management system.
- Attending site visits across the UK and occasionally overseas when required.
- Managing multiple projects at the same time and adapting to changing priorities.
Essential
- A minimum of one year experience in CAD, product design or a similar engineering design role.
- A minimum of one year experience using Autodesk Inventor , specifically within the sheet metal environment.
- Good understanding of engineering drawings and manufacturing processes.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Practical awareness of machining, fabrication, welding, assembly and general workshop processes.
- A minimum of one year experience designing parts for manufacture, including sheet metal and laser-cut / folded components.
- Confidence working on multiple projects at the same time.
- A practical problem-solving approach.
- The ability to produce accurate documentation, drawings and bills of materials.
- A minimum of one year experience working within, or following, ISO 9001 quality management procedures.
Desirable
- A full UK driving licence, or are working towards obtaining one.
- Some knowledge of radiation shielding or radiation protection products.
- A background in engineering, manufacturing or a similar technical environment.
- Experience supporting customer quotations, site surveys, installations or customer-facing project work.
- Knowledge of materials such as lead, stainless steel, aluminium, plastics and tungsten.
- Experience using Sage accounting and Microsoft Office.
