Job Description
We are looking for a caring and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to support children aged 3–11 years, including nursery and early years, in a welcoming primary school in Hereford.
This role is ideal for someone passionate about supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including autism, speech and language needs, SEMH, and additional learning needs (ALN).
You will work closely with teachers and the wider team to create a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment, helping children develop confidence, communication skills, and a love for learning through both structured activities and play-based learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with behavioural needs
- Support the implementation of behaviour management strategies and individual behaviour plans
- De-escalate challenging situations using positive behaviour support techniques
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils
- Promote emotional regulation, social skills, and positive behaviour
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, and external professionals
- Assist with daily routines, including mealtimes and personal care where required
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to behaviour monitoring and reviews
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience working with children or young people (school, care, youth work, or similar)
- Strong behaviour management skills and confidence managing challenging behaviour
- Calm, patient, and resilient approach
- Enhanced DBS on the update service - or willing to apply for one
- A Right to Work in the UK
Desirable (but not essential)
- Experience working in a school or alternative provision
- Knowledge of SEMH, SEN, or trauma-informed practice
- Relevant qualifications (e.g. L2/L3 Teaching Assistant, Youth Work, or Care-related qualifications)
- Welsh speaker
