We're looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Accounts Assistant / Bookkeeper to join our friendly and growing accountancy practice. This is a varied, all-round role supporting a wide range of clients with bookkeeping, VAT returns, payroll, sales and purchase ledger management, credit control, reconciliations and general accounting administration. You'll work closely with clients and colleagues, helping to ensure their financial records remain accurate, compliant and up to date.
Responsibilities
- Managing sales and purchase ledger functions for a portfolio of clients
- Reviewing client bookkeeping records for accuracy
- Allocating receipts and payments accurately
- Performing bank, supplier and customer account reconciliations
- Preparing and submitting VAT returns
- Maintaining accurate bookkeeping records using cloud-based accounting software
- Managing client expenses and credit card reconciliations
- Processing weekly and monthly payrolls
- Handling payroll-related queries
- Managing credit control activities and chasing outstanding debts
- Supporting the preparation of management accounts and year-end accounts
- Liaising with HMRC and other external bodies where required
- Producing financial reports and supporting month-end procedures
- Delivering excellent service to clients and colleagues
- Supporting continuous improvements in systems and processes
- Supporting and reviewing work of junior staff
- Ad hoc work as required as part of a small team
Requirements
- AAT qualified, studying towards AAT, or qualified by experience
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar role, with the ability to work unsupervised and manage multiple tasks, deadlines and client requirements independently
- Experience of bookkeeping, VAT returns, payroll, sales and purchase ledgers, and credit control
- Experience using cloud and desktop accounting software
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload effectively
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Practice experience is preferred but not essential for the right candidate
