Principal duties and responsibilities
Fashion Design at Cardiff Met is characterised by a culture of experimentation, originality and interdisciplinary collaboration. The programme encourages students to develop an individual creative identity through professional design processes that balances conceptual thinking, material exploration, technological innovation and commercial awareness. The postholder will inspire students to take creative risks, engage critically with contemporary fashion challenges, and explore the social, cultural, ethical and environmental dimensions of fashion practice.
The post holder will be required to teach across Fashion Design with an emphasis on digital design, CAD software and 3D modelling. The post holder will contribute to collaborative interdisciplinary projects in research, innovation and teaching. As part of Cardiff School of Art and Design’s unique interdisciplinary curriculum, they will contribute to other subjects as appropriate at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as cross-school modules at all levels. They will become part of a vibrant teaching and research culture, embedding their expertise into the curriculum, engaging with colleagues, and developing research outputs or impact relevant to their subject expertise and research specialisms.
Enthusiastic about student-centred pedagogy, you will contribute to education delivery, including programme management as required, across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will also make a significant contribution to employability, and professional engagement with relevant internal and external organisations, at a regional, national and international level.
You will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the department and to meet the qualitative and quantitative requirements for submission to the next Research Excellence Framework.
What we are looking for
A good level of knowledge relevant to the subject and professional area.
A sound understanding of pedagogy.
A sound understanding of research/innovation and scholarly activity.
Knowledge of the contemporary fashion industry.
Industry expertise in pattern cutting 3D garment development.
Knowledge of sustainability and environmental issues in the fashion industry.
Evidence of Digital Design skills in CAD software and 3D modelling.
Ability to develop teaching and/or research programmes and the provision of learning support.
Ability to design teaching and learning material.
Ability to employ appropriate assessment methods.
Ability to identify areas for improvement and to use initiative and problem- solving skills to improve performance.
Ability to communicate and disseminate complex and conceptual ideas in a variety of ways – presentations at conferences, reports on findings, publications, feedback etc.
Experience of teaching or equivalent.
Experience of providing academic leadership and first line support/mentoring for other colleagues.
A good honours degree.
An earned doctoral level qualification or equivalent experience to enable submission to UK HE research assessment exercises.
Ability to achieve Fellow Status as part of the Higher Education Academy’s Professional Recognition scheme, within agreed timescales (as soon as is practicably possible and definitely within three years of commencement of employment).
You will be an enthusiastic and friendly professional with excellent communication and interpersonal skills coupled with a commitment to providing an excellent student experience. An established or promising research profile and very good teaching experience on relevant programmes is essential.
