About Tangerine Red
Here at Tangerine Red, we are dedicated to all things print and design. Based in Northampton since 2012, we work with businesses and organisations of all sizes, providing design, print, signage and graphics solutions.
Our customers range from small local businesses through to corporate, government, education and cultural organisations, and our work covers everything from everyday printed materials to large-format graphics, signage, exhibitions and displays.
With our own in-house design and production facilities, our team works closely together to take projects from supplied artwork or initial brief right through to finished print and installation.
The Role
We are looking for a Part-Time Print Artworker to join our team for three days per week at our Northampton Town Centre office.
This is primarily a technical artwork and print-preparation role rather than a concept-led graphic design position.
A key part of the role will be taking artwork supplied by customers, designers and agencies and preparing it correctly for production across our wide range of print, signage and large-format products.
You'll need a good eye for detail and be confident working with Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat. You'll regularly be checking and amending existing files, resizing artwork, creating print-ready files and making sure artwork is technically suitable for the way it is going to be produced.
There will also be opportunities for straightforward design and layout work, such as adapting existing designs, creating additional items from established branding or laying out customer-supplied content. However, the main focus of the position is artworking, accuracy and print-ready file preparation rather than creating brands or concepts from scratch.
As we're a small team, you'll work closely with our wider team and customers and will manage your own jobs through our order system from artwork through to production.
Key Responsibilities
- Checking customer-supplied artwork to ensure it is suitable for print and production.
- Preparing print-ready artwork for digital print, large-format graphics, signage and other printed products.
- Pre-flighting artwork and checking dimensions, bleed, resolution, fonts, images, colour spaces, overprint and other technical requirements.
- Checking print-ready PDFs using Adobe Acrobat and identifying potential production issues.
- Making corrections and amendments to supplied artwork where required.
- Resizing and adapting existing artwork for different products, formats and dimensions.
- Working with existing brand guidelines and artwork supplied by customers' designers, marketing departments and creative agencies.
- Preparing files with production-specific elements such as cut paths, spot colours, white ink layers and other technical artwork requirements.
- Creating straightforward layouts and artwork from supplied content or established branding.
- Producing customer proofs and making requested artwork amendments.
- Liaising closely with our print production team to ensure artwork is appropriate for the intended material and production method.
- Communicating with customers by email, telephone and face-to-face regarding artwork, files and print requirements.
- Recording and managing jobs through our order system and prioritising your workload to ensure production deadlines are met.
- Checking your own work carefully before files are released to production.
- Helping with general customer service and office duties when required as part of a small team.
What We're Looking For
You'll need to be comfortable working with artwork created by other people and enjoy the technical and practical side of design and print – taking a file and making sure it will actually work when it reaches production.
Accuracy and attention to detail are particularly important. We're looking for someone who can identify potential artwork issues before they become production problems and who is comfortable working across a varied range of print processes and formats.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Good working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat.
- Experience preparing or amending artwork for print, or strong transferable artwork skills.
- Good understanding of print-ready PDFs and artwork checking, including page size, bleed, resolution, fonts, colour spaces and overprint.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Confidence working with existing designs and brand guidelines.
- Ability to accurately resize, amend and adapt artwork.
- Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage several live jobs and deadlines.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable working on Mac OS.
- Willingness to learn the technical requirements of different print processes, materials and products.
Useful, But Not Essential
Previous experience within a print, signage, graphics or production environment.
Experience preparing artwork for large-format print or signage.
Knowledge of cut paths, spot colours, white ink layers or similar production artwork.
Experience dealing directly with customers.
Experience using job management or order processing systems.
Formal graphic design qualifications are welcome but are not essential. We're more interested in practical ability, attention to detail and an understanding of how to prepare artwork accurately for production.
Hours & Working Pattern
This is a permanent, part-time position working 22.5 hours across three days per week.
Working hours are 9:00am–5:00pm with a 30-minute lunch break.
We can offer flexibility over which three days are worked, although ideally the working days will be consecutive. Suitable working patterns include:
Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday
Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
We are happy to agree the preferred three-day working pattern with the successful candidate.
The position is based at our Northampton Town Centre premises. This is an on-site role, as you'll be working closely with our design and production teams and will be able to see how the artwork you prepare translates into the finished printed product.
Salary & Benefits
£15,600–£16,800 per annum, depending on experience (FTE £26,000–£28,000).
Benefits include:
25 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays, pro rata
Company pension scheme
Free secure on-site parking
Casual dress
Friendly, small-team working environment
Opportunity to develop your knowledge of digital print, large-format graphics, signage and production
Applying
Please send us your CV together with a short covering letter outlining your relevant experience.
We'd particularly like to hear about your experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat and any experience you have preparing artwork for print or working within a print, signage or graphics environment.
If you have a portfolio or examples of artwork you've prepared for production, you're welcome to include these. However, we're not specifically looking for a creative graphic design portfolio – examples that demonstrate your technical artwork, layout and print-preparation skills are equally valuable.
