Main Purpose of Role: To undertake day to day tasks which includes repairs and maintenance of Parish Council premises, land, public conveniences and any other physical assets. Directly relating to the Parish Council’s goal of improving and maintaining standards of environmental and community safety, cleanliness and wellbeing within the village. The Parish Lengthsman will ensure the safety, cleanliness and overall positive atmosphere of the parish. You will be a visible presence within the community, interacting with residents, visitors and businesses.
Lengthsman Duties - Main Responsibilities and Key Tasks: To undertake a range of tasks, with the purpose of making visual improvements to the village, which are to include but are not limited to: Signage Cleaning, Maintenance and minor repairs (including road signs) Rotation, charging and maintenance of Vehicle Activated Speed Warning signs owned by BPC
1) Remove soil or detritus from highways
2) Cutting back vegetation overhanging the road or footway
3) Clearing footways of weeds/moss
4) Grass strimming
5) Reporting defects
6) Reporting matters requiring attention of CBMDC departments where necessary
7) Sweeping roads and pavements
8) Litter picking
9) Removing flyposters, unauthorised signs and graffiti
10) Cleaning street name plates
11) Raising of flags on Parish flagpoles as per council policy.
12) Minor repairs to street furniture
13) Village upkeep
14) Snow clearance and gritting / salting by hand
15) Leaf Clearance
16) Cleaning and maintenance of village amenities, including fountain, roundhouse, village green etc
17) Watering of BPC operated hanging baskets.
18) Clearing drainage channels and drains
Other duties and responsibilities
1) Follow risk assessments for all activities and complete documentation when appropriate.
2) Complete all works with health and safety in mind, ensuring risk assessments & method statements are followed and PPE is worn where necessary.
3) To engage with members of the public, explaining the role of the Lengthsman, noting any complaints or suggestions from members of the public and report them to the Parish Council and/or CBMDC where relevant
4) Work flexibly to agree work schedules and to prioritise workload, undertaking tasks as instructed to meet the objectives identified by the council. To maintain a diary of tasks, noting key points and deadlines and to record all work completed.
5) Ensure the council’s tools are kept clean and in good order, undertaking regular equipment maintenance tasks.
6) Attend and/or assist with the delivery of council events & activities and set up equipment and furniture where necessary. Very occasional evening & weekend working might be required.
7) Identify opportunities to work with volunteers or other bodies.
8) Undertake any other reasonable duties as may be required from time to time that are deemed appropriate to your role.
9) To attend any training necessary for the position.

Qualifications/Experience
Experience of ground maintenance work and the ability to use some machinery and tools is essential. No formal qualifications are required for this post although good communication skills are necessary. A good geographical knowledge of Burley is also essential.
Insurance
The Council will insure the Lengthsman and the duties the employee undertakes with public liability insurance cover. Employee Liability Insurance will also be held.
Provision of Equipment
The Lengthsman will be supplied with a High Visibility Jacket, an Identification card and suitable personal protective equipment (PPE). All equipment will be provided by the Parish Council and any cost of hiring equipment will be met by the Council on production of sufficient quotes/receipts
