Job Overview
Join us as a Working Foreman – Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) & Plant Operations and take a leading, hands-on role within our small and growing team.
HDD is a specialist trenchless method of installing underground pipes and ducts without excavating a continuous open trench. You’ll help organise and deliver our drilling projects safely and efficiently, while developing your knowledge of the complete HDD operation.
Although HDD is a key focus, this is a genuinely varied position. Between drilling projects, you could be operating excavators, completing groundworks, maintaining machinery, organising the yard or leading building and property-improvement work. This role requires someone who enjoys responsibility and machinery but is equally willing to get out of the cab and work alongside the team.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organise and deliver HDD and associated groundworks projects.
- Work autonomously and take responsibility for jobs from preparation through to completion.
- Lead day-to-day site activities and support less-experienced team members.
- Set up and operate HDD rigs, excavators and other plant.
- Undertake or learn pilot boring, reaming and pulling underground pipes or ducts into position.
- Organise plant, tooling, drilling rods, materials and transport.
- Complete excavations, groundworks, reinstatement and general site work.
- Inspect, maintain and carry out minor repairs to machinery and equipment.
- Keep the workshop, yard, vehicles and equipment organised.
- Undertake varied construction, building and property-improvement work.
- Maintain high standards of safety, workmanship and site presentation.
- Complete paperwork and communicate progress or problems clearly.
- Travel throughout the South West, staying away occasionally when required.
Qualifications
- Experience in plant operation, groundworks, civils, construction, utilities, agriculture or a similar practical environment.
- Experience operating excavators or other heavy machinery.
- Able to work independently, make sensible decisions and solve practical problems.
- Capable of organising people, equipment and changing workloads.
- Reliable, adaptable and willing to turn your hand to different types of work.
- Comfortable working physically and helping with labouring when required.
- Strong safety awareness and pride in completing work properly.
- A full UK driving licence is essential.
- Previous HDD experience is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided.
- An HGV licence would be advantageous; for the right candidate, we may be willing to fund HGV training.
Benefits
- Overtime paid in addition to salary
- Weekday overtime paid at 1.25 times the normal rate
- Weekend overtime paid at 1.5 times the normal rate
- 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays
- Planned Christmas shutdown
- Workplace pension
- Paid training in Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and specialist equipment
- Potential funded HGV licence training for the right candidate
- Ongoing training and professional development
- Opportunity to take real responsibility and work autonomously
- Varied work across HDD, plant operation, groundworks, maintenance and building projects
- Long-term opportunity within a small and growing business
This position is ideal for a dependable and self-motivated operator who wants greater responsibility, specialist HDD training and the freedom to manage a broad range of practical work.
