The post holder is an experienced Phlebotomist, who is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe and effective patient care to the Practice population, within their scope of practice, using excellent clinical skills following appropriate training and supervision.
The post holder will have a duty of care and a legal responsibility to the patients they see. Phlebotomists are not registered with a professional body, but they are accountable to their employer to follow their contract of employment. Employers have a responsibility to train, supervise and have oversight of the Phlebotomist they employ. This is until the competence of the Phlebotomist can be shown, but can be reviewed at any time if needed.
The Phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining blood samples from patients safely, efficiently, and compassionately for diagnostic testing, blood donation, research, or therapeutic purposes. The post holder will maintain high standards of patient care, ensure accurate sample collection and identification, and adhere to all relevant health, safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures.
Primary Responsibilities
Blood Collection
- Collect blood samples from patients of all ages using venepuncture and capillary sampling techniques.
- Ensure patient identity is accurately verified prior to sample collection.
- Prepare patients for blood collection procedures and provide reassurance where required.
- Minimise discomfort and anxiety during procedures.
- Follow established protocols for difficult venous access and seek assistance when appropriate.
Specimen Handling and Processing
- Correctly label and document all specimens according to organisational procedures.
- Ensure samples are transported, stored, and processed appropriately.
- Maintain sample integrity and confidentiality throughout the testing process.
- Complete relevant paperwork and electronic records accurately and promptly.
Patient Care
- Deliver professional, courteous, and compassionate care to all patients.
- Communicate clearly with patients regarding procedures and aftercare instructions.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to patient concerns, distress, fainting episodes, or adverse reactions.
- Support patients with diverse needs, including children, older adults, and individuals with disabilities.
Health, Safety and Infection Control
- Adhere to infection prevention and control policies at all times.
- Comply with health and safety regulations, including safe handling and disposal of sharps and clinical waste.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Report incidents, accidents, and near misses in accordance with organisational policy.
Quality Assurance
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality standards.
- Participate in audits, inspections, and quality improvement activities.
- Maintain accurate records to support clinical governance and regulatory compliance.
- Contribute to maintaining accreditation requirements where applicable.
Equipment and Stock Management
- Ensure phlebotomy equipment is maintained and available for use.
- Monitor stock levels of consumables and report shortages.
- Perform routine checks of equipment and report faults promptly.
Communication and Teamwork
- Work collaboratively with clinical, laboratory, and administrative staff.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals regarding specimen requirements or collection issues.
- Attend team meetings, mandatory training, and supervision sessions.
- Support the training and induction of new staff where appropriate.
General Responsibilities
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with data protection legislation and organisational policies.
- Demonstrate professionalism and uphold organisational values.
- Participate in continuing professional development (CPD).
- Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.
