What live-in care actually is -- You move into one client's home and live there for two weeks at a time, with your own room. You support that one person through the day so they can stay in their own house rather than move into a care home. At the end of the two weeks you hand over to another carer and have a week at home before your next placement.
It is a different job from visiting care. Instead of driving between short calls all day, you are with one person for a fortnight and get to know them properly.
Most live-in roles drop you into a stranger's house with a care plan and a phone number nobody answers. This one is different.
Visiting Angels Cheshire East is led by two doctors who have already built a well-established Visiting Angels service across Kirklees and Calderdale. They are now bringing that same model, and their hands-on support, to live-in care in Cheshire East.
You will support one client at a time in their own home, on a two weeks on, one week off pattern. You get a named Care Manager who checks in on you at least every 48 hours during your placement.
Genuine occupational requirement: this role is open to female applicants only. Our live-in clients receive intimate personal care around the clock and have asked for a female carer living in their home. Under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010, being female is a genuine occupational requirement for this position.
What you will get
- £980 a week for a single-client placement, £1,130 for a couple, paid for every week you are on placement.
- Two weeks on, one week off. That is 34 weeks of placement a year, so a third of the year is your own.
- Your own room with a lock on the door, clean, heated and furnished. We check it before you go.
- Two hours off every day. You are not on standby during it, and if your client cannot be left alone we arrange cover before the placement starts.
- Eight hours of protected sleep. If a client wakes you three or more times in a night you are paid extra and we review the package.
- £40 a week food allowance if you would rather shop for yourself, or the client provides your meals. Agreed before you arrive.
- Travel to and from your placement paid, plus 45p a mile for any driving you do with your client.
- Double time for bank holidays worked.
- A funded route through your Care Certificate and ongoing qualifications, with training scheduled around your off weeks.
- Wellbeing support through the AngelCare app: counselling, talking therapy, meditation, and access to a personal trainer and nutritionist.
- Staff turnover here is 9%, against a sector average of 29%. We have also won a Best Employee Benefits Package award.
What you will do
- Live in your client's home for two weeks at a time and support them through the day, from 7am to 10pm.
- Help with washing, dressing and personal care.
- Cook meals, prompt or administer medication, and keep on top of the everyday things that make a home work.
- Be proper company. A conversation, a walk, a trip out, a cup of tea at the right moment.
- Get to know your client and their family, so the care feels familiar.
- Keep clear notes and hand over properly to the carer who follows you.
- Tell your Care Manager when something is not right. You are never expected to sort it alone.
What you will bring
- Some care experience helps, but a good attitude matters more. If you have cared for a family member, or worked in retail, hospitality or cleaning and have the right instincts, we will train you.
- You need to be genuinely comfortable living in someone else's home for two weeks. It suits people who are self-sufficient and happy in their own company.
- You need to be able to keep a professional line in a house where you eat, sleep and work. We will talk about this properly at interview.
- A driving licence is useful but not essential. We pay your travel to and from placement, so you do not need your own car to take this job.
