Role Overview
As a Surfacing Operative, you will work within a coordinated asphalt machine gang to deliver high‑quality surfacing works across the South West. You will support the safe and efficient operation of plant, vehicles, and equipment, ensuring all works meet company standards and client expectations. The role requires teamwork, clear communication, and a strong commitment to safe working practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the delivery of asphalt surfacing works as part of a machine gang.
- Operate vehicles and plant safely, including both general and specialist machinery.
- Maintain clear communication with fellow operatives, supervisors, and site management.
- Follow all Connor Construction Health, Safety & Environmental procedures.
- Look after plant and equipment, reporting defects and ensuring safe operation.
- Assist with laying, levelling, compacting, and finishing asphalt materials.
- Work in line with site instructions, traffic management setups, and project specifications.
- Represent Connor Construction professionally on all client sites.
You Must Have
- A valid CSCS card.
- Experience in road surfacing, highways, or heavy civil operations.
- NPORS, CPCS, or equivalent plant‑operation certification for relevant machinery (paver, roller, planer, dumper, etc.), or willingness to train.
- A full UK driving licence (preferred).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a surfacing gang.
- A consistent commitment to safe working practices and high‑quality workmanship.
Additional Information – South West Region
- Connor Construction operates multiple gangs across the South West, so flexibility to travel between sites is essential.
- Our South West teams support works throughout Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and Bristol.
- We are also recruiting experienced Surfacing Supervisors in the Dorset area to support expanding programmes of work.
- Overtime, night shifts, and weekend work may be required depending on programme demands.
