About the Role
Tree Ingeniería Engineering Solutions is looking for a Building Services Engineer to join our team in Edinburgh. You will support the design, coordination, assessment, and delivery of mechanical and electrical building systems across commercial, residential, public-sector, and infrastructure projects.
This position is suitable for an engineer who enjoys combining technical design with practical project coordination. You will work closely with architects, structural engineers, contractors, consultants, suppliers, and clients to ensure that building systems are efficient, reliable, safe, and suitable for each project's operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and review mechanical and electrical building-services systems.
- Prepare technical calculations, specifications, drawings, and engineering reports.
- Support the design of heating, ventilation, cooling, lighting, power, and water systems.
- Review architectural and structural drawings to identify building-services requirements.
- Coordinate mechanical and electrical designs with other engineering disciplines.
- Conduct site surveys and assess existing building systems and equipment.
- Identify opportunities to improve building energy efficiency and operational performance.
- Assist with equipment selection and preparation of technical schedules.
- Review contractor drawings, technical submissions, and product information.
- Support tender preparation and evaluation of contractor proposals.
- Participate in project meetings with clients, architects, contractors, and consultants.
- Monitor construction activities to confirm compliance with approved designs.
- Conduct site inspections and prepare technical observations and progress reports.
- Investigate engineering problems and recommend practical corrective solutions.
- Support testing, commissioning, and handover of completed building systems.
- Review operation and maintenance documentation.
- Maintain accurate design records, calculations, drawings, and project correspondence.
- Support energy-performance and sustainability assessments.
- Assist with project programmes, technical risks, and engineering deliverables.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable UK building regulations and engineering standards.
What We Are Looking For
- At least 2–4 years of experience in building-services engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction engineering, or a related position.
- A degree or recognised qualification in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building-services engineering, or a related discipline.
- Good understanding of mechanical and electrical systems within commercial or residential buildings.
- Experience preparing engineering calculations, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Ability to interpret architectural, structural, and engineering drawings.
- Good understanding of building-services design and construction processes.
- Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate engineering requirements across several disciplines.
- Good project organisation and deadline-management skills.
- Strong written documentation and report-writing ability.
- Confidence communicating with clients, contractors, consultants, and suppliers.
- Ability to manage several engineering tasks simultaneously.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- Willingness to travel to project sites when required.
Preferred Skills
- Experience using AutoCAD, Revit, or similar engineering-design software.
- Knowledge of building-information modelling processes.
- Familiarity with mechanical and electrical design software.
- Understanding of UK Building Regulations and relevant British Standards.
- Experience with energy-efficient and low-carbon building systems.
- Knowledge of heat pumps, renewable-energy systems, or energy-management technologies.
- Experience supporting commercial or public-sector construction projects.
- Familiarity with BREEAM or other sustainability-assessment frameworks.
- Experience with building-energy modelling and performance analysis.
- Knowledge of testing and commissioning procedures.
- Understanding of construction health and safety requirements.
- Membership of CIBSE, IMechE, IET, or another recognised engineering institution.
Mindset
You are technically curious, methodical, and focused on producing practical engineering solutions. You understand that successful building-services design requires careful coordination between architecture, structure, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and the needs of building users.
You check your work carefully, communicate potential design conflicts early, and take ownership of assigned technical responsibilities. You are comfortable balancing engineering performance, project cost, energy efficiency, regulatory requirements, and practical constructability.
