Job Summary
To ensure the nursery buildings, grounds, equipment and facilities are safe, well-maintained and compliant with health and safety standards. The postholder will carry out a wide range of planned and reactive maintenance tasks to provide a safe, welcoming and high-quality environment for children, staff and visitors.
Responsibilities
- General Building Maintenance
- Carry out day-to-day repairs throughout the nursery.
- Perform planned preventative maintenance.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests.
- Maintain the internal and external appearance of the nursery.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and to a high standard.
- Plumbing
- Replace taps.
- Repair leaking pipes and fittings.
- Install new sinks and wash basins.
- Install and replace toilets and cisterns.
- Unblock sinks, toilets and drains.
- Replace toilet seats and accessories.
- Carpentry & Joinery
- Replace door handles and locks.
- Adjust and repair doors.
- Fit shelving and storage units.
- Build and install outdoor ramps and steps.
- Repair fencing and gates.
- Construct small timber structures as required.
- Install skirting boards and trim.
- Decorating
- Prepare walls and woodwork.
- Paint walls and ceilings.
- Gloss doors, skirting boards and frames.
- Carry out touch-up decorating.
- Maintain exterior painted surfaces where required.
- Electrical (within competence)
- Replace faulty light fittings and bulbs.
- Repair or replace damaged sockets and switches.
- Investigate and repair non-working plug sockets (where competent and qualified).
- Replace extractor fans where appropriate.
- Ensure emergency lighting faults are reported or repaired within competence.
- Liaise with qualified electricians for work requiring certification.
- Flooring
- Lay vinyl flooring.
- Lay laminate flooring.
- Repair damaged flooring.
- Replace floor trims.
- Ensure flooring remains safe and free from trip hazards.
- External Maintenance
- Build or repair outdoor steps and access ramps.
- Clear guttering and downpipes.
- Maintain playground equipment.
- Repair fencing.
- Pressure wash paths and play areas.
- Carry out basic landscaping and garden maintenance.
- Repair paving and external surfaces.
- Grit pathways during icy weather where necessary.
- Fixtures & Fittings
- Hang pictures, whiteboards, noticeboards and displays.
- Install TV brackets and shelving.
- Fit mirrors, coat hooks and handrails.
- Assemble and install nursery furniture.
- Secure furniture to walls where required.
- Safety & Compliance
- Carry out routine health and safety inspections.
- Identify hazards and report defects.
- Maintain maintenance records.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, COSHH, and nursery policies.
- Support fire safety checks and emergency procedures.
- Ensure all work minimises disruption to nursery operations.
- Equipment Maintenance
- Repair nursery furniture.
- Maintain outdoor play equipment.
- Replace damaged fixtures.
- Carry out minor repairs to equipment where safe and appropriate.
- General Duties
- Order maintenance materials and supplies.
- Keep workshops and storage areas tidy.
- Dispose of waste appropriately.
- Work alongside external contractors when required.
- Assist with emergency maintenance issues outside normal working hours if necessary.
- Person SpecificationExperience
- Proven experience in electrical maintenance, mechanical repair, or facilities management.
- Strong knowledge of schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Hands-on experience with welding techniques and electrical systems troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and automation technology.
- Previous supervisory or team-leading experience within a maintenance environment.
- Excellent communication skills in English; capable of liaising effectively with team members and external contractors.
- Customer service orientation with a proactive attitude towards problem-solving.
- Leadership qualities with the ability to organise tasks efficiently and motivate team members for optimal performance.
