UCL is London’s global university. LCCOS – Library, Culture, Collections and Open Science – provides outstanding staff, services and resources to support the world-class research, education and enterprise that is undertaken in UCL, and connects the world with UCL through innovative programming and engagement activities. LCCOS is acknowledged as an international leader in Open Science and Scholarship. The LCCOS family comprises four museums and allied object collections, 14 libraries, the UCL Student Centre, Special Collections facilities, multiple additional learning spaces, and a substantial off-site storage facility. We also provide comprehensive services to healthcare staff through our partnerships with five NHS Trusts. LCCOS holds the UK Customer Service Excellence (CSE) Award, The National Archives (TNA) Archives Service Accreditation, and Arts Council England Museum Accreditation. The combined staff in UCL LCCOS totals around 450. LCCOS is part of the Office of the UCL Vice-Provost (Faculties). UCL Museums and Cultural Programmes is a multidisciplinary team responsible for the centrally managed museum collections and spaces at UCL, including the Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology, the Grant Museum of Zoology, UCL Art Museum and UCL Pathology Museum, the Science Collections and the Object-Based Learning Laboratory. The team uses UCL’s rich and diverse collections to support teaching, research and public engagement. Within the collections we hold human remains, and we are committed to managing these with care and respect. The Petrie Museum is home to an internationally significant, Arts Council England Designated collection of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology, as well as archaeological archives and modern material relating to past staff and archaeologists. The core of the collection derives from the archaeological work of Sir Flinders Petrie and his successors, conducted primarily between the 1880s and the 1940s in the Nile Valley. Today, the collection comprises over 80,600 objects, representing one of the most extensive archaeological assemblages of this kind outside Egypt and Sudan. The Petrie Museum’s curatorial team uses the collections to critically reflect on the legacy of the removal of cultural heritage under colonial administrations, and to support research, teaching and public engagement in a broad range of specialisms. We uphold current best practice on the care and ethical curation of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology collections, including human remains.
The Petrie Museum’s Assistant Curator supports the management and care of and provide access to Petrie Museum collections (both physical and digital) for UCL and external audiences. Activities will support the use of collections for research, teaching and public engagement including supervision, support and facilitation for research visits and enquiries; delivering or assisting the delivery of teaching relating to Petrie Museum; collections care activities and documentation; and facilitating loans. All duties will be delivered in line with the collection’s agreed curatorial agenda and collections management plans, and the Assistant Curator will work in close collaboration with curatorial colleagues, the Collections Management team and Visitor Services staff, as well as wider LCCOS staff and partners in academic departments. This role will involve working with a large and important collection of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology located on UCL’s Bloomsbury campus. Hybrid working: This is an on-site role.
