We are seeking a compassionate, experienced, and highly motivated Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) to join our Secure Patient Transport team. In this rewarding role, you will provide high-quality clinical care and professional leadership while ensuring the safe, secure, and dignified transportation of individuals experiencing mental ill health, learning disabilities, autism, and complex physical health needs.
Working alongside Secure Patient Transport Support Workers, healthcare professionals, and partner agencies, you will be responsible for assessing, monitoring, and supporting patients throughout their journey, ensuring their clinical, emotional, and physical wellbeing while maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and person-centred care.
Key Responsibilities
Provide professional mental health nursing care during the transportation of patients between hospitals, mental health units, secure settings, residential services, and community healthcare facilities.
Undertake comprehensive clinical and dynamic risk assessments before and throughout each journey to ensure patient and staff safety.
Assess and monitor patients' mental and physical health, recognising deterioration and responding appropriately to changing clinical needs.
Lead and support the transport team in delivering safe, therapeutic, and least restrictive care in accordance with current legislation and best practice.
Develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients while promoting dignity, respect, recovery, and independence.
Apply evidence-based de-escalation and conflict management techniques to safely manage distressed or challenging behaviours.
Administer medications where clinically appropriate and in accordance with the NMC Code, medicines management policies, and Patient Group Directions (where applicable).
Maintain accurate clinical documentation, transport records, incident reports, safeguarding documentation, and handover records.
Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary teams, ambulance services, hospitals, commissioners, carers, families, and external healthcare professionals to ensure safe and seamless transfers.
Ensure compliance with safeguarding procedures, infection prevention and control standards, information governance requirements, and organisational policies.
Participate in clinical audits, governance activities, reflective practice, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Maintain vehicles and clinical equipment to ensure readiness, cleanliness, and compliance with healthcare standards.
Essential Requirements
Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN).
Post-registration experience within mental health services, psychiatric intensive care, forensic mental health, crisis services, community mental health, or acute inpatient settings.
Excellent assessment, communication, and clinical decision-making skills.
Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), safeguarding legislation, and relevant professional standards.
Ability to remain calm and effective in challenging or high-pressure situations.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build therapeutic relationships.
Full UK driving licence (minimum two years).
Ability to obtain an Enhanced DBS Certificate with Adult and Child Workforce clearance or be registered with the DBS Update Service.
Successful completion of occupational health screening.
Flexibility to work shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
Experience within secure mental health services, forensic services, psychiatric intensive care units (PICU), emergency mental health services, patient transport, or ambulance services.
Current training in PMVA, MAPA, CPI, or another recognised conflict management and restraint programme.
Immediate Life Support (ILS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.
Non-Medical Prescribing qualification (desirable).
Experience supporting patients with autism spectrum conditions, learning disabilities, dementia, substance misuse, or complex behavioural presentations.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care and recovery-focused practice.
