FURTHER INFORMATION ON INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES ORGANISATION
International Communities Organisation (ICO) is a global, neutral and independent international organisation working for self-advocacy of marginalised communities and Peoples' economic, social and political rights in conflict affected settings. ICO has held special consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council on this mandate since 2021. To promote peace globally, ICO works across three core pillars of work: supporting Communities (implementing cross-community activities); facilitating Diplomacy (convening dialogue and reconciliation peace talks); and strengthening Societies (addressing economic and political inequalities).
The creation of the International Communities Organisation (ICO) in 2016 was inspired by the Liechtenstein Institute work and conference, which explored ways of reconciling self-determination principles and territorial integrity, as well as innovative ways of leveraging the right to self-determination as a tool for conflict prevention and resolution. Core to ICO’s mission is ensuring communities have access to their political, social and economic rights, combining development strategies and human rights resolutions and principles to empower communities.
ICO believes that marginalised communities, particularly in conflict-affected and politically fragile areas, will strengthen their capacity for self-advocacy and be politically represented, economically empowered, and socially equal. By ensuring meaningful participation of all in peace processes - whether through grassroots dialogue, civil society engagement, or direct representation at the negotiating table - diplomatic engagement between governments, conflict actors, and influential international stakeholders will be better informed by the real needs, priorities, and lived experiences of these communities. This will lead to peace talks that are more representative, address the issues affecting these groups, expand the scope for sustainable solutions, and contribute to reconciliation, resolution of historical grievances, and lasting peace agreements.
