Job Summary
The General Maintenance Operative is responsible for carrying out routine maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep activities across the structural steel fabrication facility and external areas. The role supports the safe and efficient operation of production equipment, buildings, and site infrastructure while ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
The successful candidate will work closely with the production team to minimise downtime, maintain a safe working environment, and support continuous improvement initiatives throughout the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Facility Maintenance
- Carry out routine inspections of buildings, workshops, offices, and external areas.
- Perform general repairs and maintenance to doors, floors, fencing, lighting, plumbing, and site infrastructure.
- Maintain housekeeping standards across the facility.
- Assist with site improvement projects and modifications.
- Planning maintenance around production.
Equipment Support
- Conduct basic preventative maintenance on fabrication equipment, tools and machinery.
- Carry out pre planned maintenance activities.
- Report equipment defects and potential failures promptly.
- Support machinery relocation, installation, and commissioning activities as required.
- Ensuring that tools, machinery and equipment are all serviced and repaired.
- Logging all maintenance work carried out.
Grounds and External Areas
- Maintain yard areas, access routes, storage compounds, and parking facilities.
- Perform seasonal maintenance tasks including gritting, snow clearance, and vegetation control.
- Ensure waste and recycling areas remain organised and compliant.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Follow all company health and safety procedures and safe systems of work.
- Participate in risk assessments and toolbox talks.
- Ensure work areas are maintained in a safe and tidy condition.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently.
- Report hazards, near misses, and incidents immediately.
- Produce Task Specific Method Statements prior to carrying out non-routine tasks.
General Duties
- Support production teams with non-production maintenance tasks.
- Operate forklifts, MEWPs, or other site equipment where appropriately trained and authorised.
- Assist contractors working on-site and ensure compliance with site procedures.
- Complete maintenance records, inspection sheets, and work orders accurately.
- Create and maintain a log of all breakdowns and repairs.
- Contact suppliers to obtain quotes.
- Create and log Purchase Orders for any equipment purchased.
- Log warranties for any new equipment.
- Any other ad hoc duties.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Previous experience in a maintenance, facilities, industrial, manufacturing, or construction environment.
- Good practical skills and ability to carry out basic repairs.
- Understanding of workplace health and safety requirements.
- Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workload.
- Good IT Skills
- A good working knowledge of tools, plumbing, electrical work and grounds maintenance.
- Be able to work flexibly and vary working pattern as and when required.
Desirable
- Experience within a structural steel fabrication or heavy manufacturing environment.
- Forklift Truck (FLT) licence.
- MEWP/IPAF certification.
- Basic welding or fabrication skills.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance systems.
- First Aid qualification.
