Purpose of the job:
The Maintenance Officer is a key member of staff, responsible for ensuring that the college buildings, grounds and facilities are safe, functional, and well maintained to support students, staff and visitors.
This role ensures that college facilities are well maintained, compliant with safety and regulatory standards, and supportive of academic, residential and administrative duties.
By the nature of the responsibility, the following list is not exhaustive but is a guideline as to the main requirements of the role. The Maintenance Officer must be willing and flexible, prepared to carry out reasonable tasks not necessarily covered within this Job Description.
Maintenance:
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee preventative and reactive maintenance across all college facilities, including buildings, classrooms, laboratories, offices, common areas, and boarding accommodation.
- Manage and monitor the weekly Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule across both college sites, ensuring work is completed in line with training, qualifications, and operational requirements.
- Manage service contracts for specialist maintenance and repair work, supervising and supporting contractors while on site.
- Maintain and manage inventories of tools, equipment, materials, and spare parts.
- Respond to helpdesk requests and emergency maintenance issues as directed by the Line Manager, Director of Operations and Finance, or Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
- Carry out required legislative and compliance checks, ensuring all facilities meet health, safety, safeguarding, and statutory requirements.
- Take a proactive approach to identifying and resolving maintenance issues, independently prioritising and attending to tasks where appropriate.
- Support the ongoing operation and development of college facilities by undertaking additional reasonable duties as required.
- Maintain a professional, flexible, proactive, and diplomatic approach at all times.
- Ensure all required training is completed and kept up to date through Educate, including training related to manual handling and the safe use of chemicals.
- Be aware that the role involves physical activity, including lifting, carrying equipment, and handling materials where required.
Security:
- Prioritise the safety, security, and wellbeing of students, staff, visitors, college buildings, and property throughout operational hours and across the academic year.
- Secure and unlock campus buildings where required.
- Manage the control, issue, and safe custody of keys in line with established procedures.
- Proactively respond to security concerns, incidents, and emergencies, whether identified independently or directed by management.
- Contact and liaise with emergency services when required.
- Record incidents accurately and complete concise reports in line with college procedures.
- Operate security systems and equipment in accordance with procedures, ensuring equipment is maintained appropriately and faults are reported promptly.
- Support and manage difficult or confrontational situations professionally and appropriately.
- Carry out fire safety checks and support fire alarm testing and evacuation procedures.
- Work in line with the college’s Health, Safety, and Welfare policies and procedures.
- Attend training and follow guidance provided by the Line Manager where required.
Facilities:
- Assist with the movement and arrangement of furniture, equipment, and resources across the college.
- Prepare and set up rooms and facilities for meetings, events, and other special activities.
- Carry out energy-saving checks, including ensuring lights, projectors, and equipment are switched off when not in use.
- Support emergency evacuations, including assisting individuals with additional needs where required.
- Carry out daily refuse and recycling duties, including positioning heavy-duty bins ready for collection.
Health & Safety:
- Comply with all college health and safety procedures across all sites.
- Report hazards, concerns, incidents, and near misses promptly and appropriately.
- Maintain up-to-date mandatory training and participate in additional health and safety training as required.
- Undertake IOSH Working Safely training and any other required health and safety qualifications or training.

- Demonstrate a strong problem-solving mindset with excellent attention to detail.
- Be physically able to meet the demands of the role, including lifting, standing, and walking for extended periods.

- Possess strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.

- Represent CSFC professionally and consistently deliver high standards of customer service to students, parents, guardians, agents, staff, and external providers.

- Hold a recognised trade qualification or be working towards achieving one.
- Have practical experience across a range of areas including maintenance, repairs, building work, and decorating.
- Be willing and able to work flexible hours and provide cover for colleagues during periods of absence or leave where required. Overtime may be available subject to management approval and college discretion.
Safeguarding Responsibilities:
Cardiff Sixth Form College is committed to its responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare or its students in line with government recommendations and policies. Due to this, all staff at the college have a responsibility for safeguarding and reporting any concerns regarding students to the DSP or a Deputy Safeguarding Officer. Your safeguarding responsibilities mean that you will need to:
- Demonstrate a commitment to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons in line with College Policy and procedure.
- Respond and deal with incidents in a sensitive, empathetic and supportive manner, reporting any incidents to the accommodation manager and pastoral team.
- Undertake initial and regular safeguarding training and be willing to undertake additional safeguarding training to enhance professional development.
Terms & Conditions:
Remuneration: £33,000 – 36,000
Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Holiday entitlement: 38 days (inclusive of the 8 normal bank holidays)
Notice period: 1 month
Probationary period: 6 months reviewable at discretion of CSFC
Pension: Inclusion in the Cardiff Sixth Form Pension Plan
Training: Commitment to ongoing training, as required
