Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Payroll Specialist to join our payroll bureau on a fully remote basis.
This is a hands-on role where you will be responsible for managing payrolls for a portfolio of clients, ensuring they are processed accurately, efficiently and on time.
We are looking for someone who is highly organised, comfortable working independently and takes genuine ownership of their work and client relationships. You should be confident learning new payroll software and systems, as well as looking for ways to improve processes and make the way we work more efficient.
This role would suit someone who enjoys working in a payroll bureau environment and wants the autonomy and responsibility to manage their own workload and client portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Process and manage payrolls for a portfolio of bureau clients from start to finish.
- Take ownership of your allocated clients, ensuring their payrolls are accurate, compliant and delivered on time.
- Communicate directly with clients and respond confidently to payroll queries.
- Manage starters, leavers, changes to pay, deductions, pensions, statutory payments and other payroll adjustments.
- Complete payroll submissions and ensure all relevant deadlines are met.
- Reconcile payrolls and carry out thorough checks to identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Keep accurate and up-to-date client and payroll records.
- Build strong working relationships with clients and become a trusted point of contact for their payroll needs.
- Work independently, managing your own workload and prioritising deadlines across multiple clients.
- Become confident using our payroll software and systems, with the ability and willingness to learn new software quickly.
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, systems and client service.
- Suggest and implement process improvements rather than simply following existing procedures.
- Take responsibility for resolving issues and seeing tasks through to completion.
- Support the wider team when required and contribute to the continued development of the payroll bureau.
About You
We're looking for someone who:
- Has previous experience working in a payroll bureau or a similar multi-client payroll environment.
- Has strong practical payroll knowledge and understands the importance of accuracy and deadlines.
- Is comfortable working very independently and doesn't need constant supervision.
- Is confident taking ownership of a portfolio of clients and building positive client relationships.
- Is highly organised and able to manage multiple payroll deadlines simultaneously.
- Is confident communicating with clients and explaining payroll matters clearly.
- Is comfortable learning new payroll software and systems and picking up new technology quickly.
- Has a proactive approach and naturally looks for ways to make processes better and more efficient.
- Is willing to question existing processes and suggest improvements where appropriate.
- Has excellent attention to detail and takes pride in producing accurate work.
- Is dependable, takes responsibility for their work and follows issues through to resolution.
- Can work effectively as part of a remote team while being capable of managing their own day-to-day workload.

Qualifications
- Proven experience working with multiple payroll softwares
- Strong knowledge of accounting software and data entry processes related to payroll operations
- Familiarity with HR software
- Experience handling accounts payable transactions related to employee compensation
- Excellent analysis skills to identify discrepancies and resolve issues efficiently
- Basic understanding of human resources practices, employment laws, and compliance standards
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
