Our client in Chelsea has a 10 year old boy who is working at an EYFS level, with Speech and Language and global delays. The family are looking for a SEN HLTA to implement a needs and interest based Home Education Programme, encompassing teaching and speech therapy, with the main goal to improve his speech and communication.
The family has speech therapist working three days per week, who runs a speech programme and general learning. This role is a job share with the speech therapist, complimenting their work and implementing lessons and strategies.
The ideal Candidate will have at least 5 years experience working with minimally-speaking children in a SEN school. The candidate will have experience with a range of communication systems including Makaton, AAC, and communication boards. The candidate will have experience working with speech and language therapists, OT, and other professionals integrating their goals into the daily timetable.
This role is perfect for someone who wants to work with a child with SEN in a different environment to a school. It allows for flexibility and teaching to the child’s interests and needs, versus the state curriculum.
The role will take place in his home as well as out in the community. There is a playroom and small kitchen at home that will be used for lessons, as well as a back garden.
He does well by learning in more natural environments, such as going out into the community to attend home-school groups, going to soft plays, swimming, to the Zoo and other areas which are great at sparking his interest in learning.
He does well with incidental learning when he is motivated to ask questions, count money to buy a treat or read signs to figure out the world around him.
A strong background in SEN is required, as well as behavioural management, understanding language development and experience working on a multi-disciplinary team.
The role is 2 days per week 9-5 or 10-6 and will be 44 weeks per year, as well as attending monthly coordination sessions of 2 hours during the speech therapists working days to learn new goals and how to implement systems. There is an opportunity for travel.
At least a day’s paid trial is required to make sure a good match is made between the boy and his teacher/TA.
The role:
- Needs and interest based home education programme
- Incorporate life skills and real life practical lessons
- Working one-to-one with a boy
- Role allows for creativity and focuses on teaching rather than administration
- Make a difference in the boy’s life by designing and implementing a bespoke curriculum
- Friendly and supportive family who respect and value the professionals who work with their son
Candidate profile we’re looking for:
- Must be familiar with a range of communication systems
- Be confident taking the boy out into the community and teaching through everyday activities and excursions
- Experienced HLTA/ teacher in an SEN school (5 years +) who is confident in planning a curriculum
- Starting in September
- Right to work in UK
- Must have a clear DBS, ideally on the update system
- Driver is highly preferred
We’ve met the boy and family, who are lovely and supportive, whilst also understanding the value a great teacher or speech therapist can add and the difference they can make.
Salary depends on experience and if you travel. £30,000+ (this is the salary for the 2 days, not a pro-rata figure)
Pay: £30,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
