Graduate Design Engineer
Location: Ossett, West Yorkshire
Hartwell Manufacturing is a family-run engineering business with nearly 50 years of experience delivering high-quality acoustic enclosures and heavy steel fabrication projects. From our Ossett headquarters, we support clients in the power, data centre and industrial sectors with engineered solutions built on precision, collaboration and reliability. The culture is hands-on, team-focused and proud of the work we produce.
As Hartwell continues to grow, we are looking to strengthen our Engineering team with the appointment of a Graduate Design Engineer.
This is an excellent opportunity for a recent engineering graduate, or someone in the early stages of their design career, to develop their experience within a busy manufacturing environment. Working alongside experienced engineers and designers, you will be involved in the design and development of acoustic enclosures and associated fabricated products for major projects across the power, data centre and industrial sectors.
We are not looking for someone with years of industry experience. A strong engineering foundation, good CAD skills and the willingness to learn are far more important. Equally, if you already have one or two years of practical design experience, that would be a real advantage.
The Role
Key responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the design and development of acoustic enclosures and fabricated assemblies.
- Producing and updating 3D models, engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Working from customer specifications and project requirements.
- Supporting experienced Design Engineers throughout the design process.
- Developing an understanding of design for manufacture and fabrication.
- Working closely with Production, Projects and other engineering teams.
- Assisting with design changes and modifications as projects progress through manufacture.
- Supporting the resolution of design and manufacturing issues.
- Ensuring drawings and documentation are accurate and kept up to date.
- Developing your technical knowledge of Hartwell's products, manufacturing processes and customer requirements.
- Contributing ideas and supporting continuous improvement within the Engineering team.
About You
We are looking for someone at the beginning of their engineering career who wants to develop into a well-rounded Design Engineer.
You will ideally have:
- A degree, HNC, HND or similar qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.
- Some experience using 3D CAD software through university, college, placements or employment.
- A basic understanding of engineering drawings and mechanical design principles.
- An interest in manufacturing, fabrication and seeing your designs become physical products.
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- A willingness to learn from experienced engineers and production teams.
- Good communication skills and the confidence to work with colleagues across different departments.
- A practical and enthusiastic approach to engineering.
Previous industry experience is not essential. Applications are welcomed from graduates looking for their first permanent engineering position.
Candidates with one or two years of mechanical design experience who are looking for the next step in their career would also be particularly well suited.
Why Hartwell?
Hartwell continues to grow rapidly, with increasing demand across the power, data centre and industrial sectors. For a Graduate Design Engineer, this provides the opportunity to gain genuine hands-on experience working on large, technically interesting projects and to see your designs progress from initial concept through to manufacture.
You will work alongside experienced engineers, develop your technical and commercial understanding and have the opportunity to build a long-term career within a growing engineering business.
If you are a Mechanical Engineering graduate or junior Design Engineer looking for an opportunity to develop your skills in a practical manufacturing environment, we would be interested to hear from you.
