Overview
We are seeking a dedicated SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant (Level 1-3) to support children with special educational needs within our inclusive learning environment. The successful candidate will play a vital role in fostering a positive, nurturing atmosphere that promotes the social and emotional development of pupils. This paid position offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience working with children with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum, and to contribute meaningfully to their educational journey.
Duties
- Provide tailored support to children with SEMH needs, including those with autism and other disabilities
- Assist teachers in planning and delivering specialised activities that promote social and emotional skills
- Support children with behavioural challenges, encouraging positive interactions and self-regulation
- Work closely with individual pupils to develop personalised learning strategies
- Support children during classroom activities, breaks, and specialised therapy sessions
- Assist with toddler care when required, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for younger children
- Foster effective communication between pupils, teachers, and parents to ensure consistent support
- Monitor progress and behaviour, providing feedback to the teaching team for ongoing development plans
Requirements
- Experience working with individuals with autism or other disabilities is highly desirable
- Prior experience in teaching or supporting children within a special education setting is advantageous
- Strong communication skills to effectively engage with children and team members
- Compassionate and patient approach towards children with diverse needs
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
- Knowledge of special education practices and behaviour management techniques is beneficial
- Flexibility to adapt to different needs and situations within the classroom setting
- Relevant qualifications or training in special education or child development are preferred but not essential
