Job Purpose:
To prepare, cook, and serve high-quality meals in a canteen environment while maintaining excellent food hygiene standards. The role includes customer interaction, maintaining a clean and safe kitchen, and occasionally working independently.
Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation & Cooking
- Prepare and cook fresh meals in line with menu plans and dietary requirements
- Ensure food is prepared to high quality and presentation standards
- Monitor portion control and minimise food waste
- Check deliveries and ensure proper food storage
Customer Service
- Serve customers in a friendly and professional manner
- Respond to customer queries regarding ingredients and allergens
- Take feedback and maintain a positive dining experience
Lone Working
- Confidently manage kitchen operations independently when required
- Open and/or close the kitchen safely
- Ensure all food safety and security procedures are followed during lone shifts
Cleaning & Hygiene
- Maintain a clean and organised kitchen at all times
- Clean work surfaces, equipment, utensils, and storage areas
- Complete daily and weekly cleaning schedules
- Ensure compliance with food hygiene and health & safety regulations
Stock & Administration
- Monitor stock levels and report shortages
- Rotate stock following FIFO (First In, First Out) principles
- Record temperature checks and maintain kitchen logs
Skills & Experience Required:
- Previous experience as a chef or cook in a canteen, café, or similar environment
- Knowledge of food safety and hygiene regulations
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail
