The Polishing Operative is responsible for carrying out pinking, polishing, finishing, and VCR repair activities across iCAM Engineering to ensure that containers, components, and associated products are completed to the required quality standard, customer specification, and company requirements.
Working within the Polishing Department, the operative plays an important role in ensuring that containers are prepared, polished, repaired, and finished to a consistently high standard before progressing to the next stage of production.
A key part of the role is the polishing of containers to achieve the required surface finish and appearance, with particular attention to workmanship, cleanliness, consistency, and detail. The role also includes carrying out VCR repairs and associated remedial work to ensure products meet the required standard before release.
The Polishing Operative will work closely with supervisors, production team members and quality inspectors to identify defects, complete repairs, and support a right-first-time approach across the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out polishing activities on containers, components, and associated products to achieve the required surface finish and a consistently high standard of workmanship.
- Prepare container surfaces appropriately before polishing, ensuring that the correct methods, tools, equipment, and consumables are used.
- Carry out pinking and finishing activities in accordance with company procedures, production requirements, and customer specifications.
- Inspect surfaces during and after polishing to identify scratches, marks, contamination, damage, poor finishes, or other defects requiring attention.
- Ensure completed containers have a clean, consistent, and professional finish before being presented for inspection.
- Carry out VCR repairs and remedial work in accordance with company requirements and agreed repair methods.
- Assess VCR repair requirements and identify areas requiring rework, repair, polishing, cleaning, or further attention.
- Ensure all repair and polishing work is completed to the required standard and within agreed production timescales.
- Use polishing machines, hand tools, abrasives, polishing compounds, and other equipment safely and correctly.
- Inspect tools and equipment before use and report damaged, defective, or unsafe equipment immediately.
- Maintain a high level of attention to detail, particularly on visible surfaces and areas where the quality of the final finish is critical.
- Follow company procedures, standard operating procedures, work instructions, risk assessments, and method statements relevant to the role.
- Wear and maintain the required personal protective equipment when carrying out polishing, repair, or finishing activities.
- Maintain good housekeeping standards within the Pinking and Polishing Department and ensure work areas are kept clean, organised, and free from unnecessary hazards.
- Store tools, equipment, polishing materials, and consumables correctly after use.
- Handle containers and components carefully to prevent damage to completed or partially completed products.
- Support production requirements across the department and other operational areas where appropriate.
Person Specification
The Pinking and Polishing Operative should be practical, reliable, and detail-focused, with a strong commitment to producing work to a consistently high standard. They should take pride in the appearance and quality of finished containers and be able to identify surface defects or areas requiring further attention.
The role requires someone who is comfortable using polishing equipment, hand tools, abrasives, and associated materials in a production environment. Previous experience of polishing, metal finishing, manufacturing, or similar practical work would be beneficial.
The operative should be capable of carrying out VCR repairs and remedial work carefully and methodically, ensuring that defects are properly addressed rather than simply improving their appearance.
A flexible approach is required, as workloads and priorities may change depending on production requirements, VCR repairs, customer requirements, and quality priorities.
Above all, the Pinking and Polishing Operative should demonstrate good attention to detail, pride in workmanship, safe working practices, and a commitment to ensuring that every container leaving the department meets the required quality and finish standards.
