Hospital Liaison Substance Misuse Worker
(Fixed Term - 12 months)
Make a difference when it matters most.
Are you passionate about helping people make positive changes in their lives? Do you want a role where your skills can have a real and lasting impact?
The Alcohol & Drug Service (ADS) has been transforming the lives of people affected by drugs and alcohol for over 40 years. As a registered charity, we’re proud to support individuals, families and communities to achieve positive change.
We’re now looking for a motivated and compassionate Hospital Liaison Substance Misuse Worker to join our team at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
Why join us?
Hospital Liaison is an exciting partnership between ADS and Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH). You’ll be part of the wider Aspire treatment Service, working alongside experienced professionals in a fast-paced hospital environment.
No two days will be the same. You’ll have the opportunity to make a difference at a crucial point in someone’s life, supporting people to take the first steps towards positive change and helping reduce future hospital attendance.
You’ll work with people experiencing substance use problems across Accident & Emergency and inpatient wards, providing:
- Advice, information and brief interventions
- Assessments of risk and need
- Support to engage with specialist substance misuse treatment
- Practical, person-centred interventions that encourage positive change
- Collaborative working with hospital colleagues and wider services
This is an excellent opportunity to develop your experience and career within the substance misuse field, which is experiencing significant growth and development.
Who are we looking for?
We’re looking for someone who is compassionate, motivated and committed to improving outcomes for people affected by substance use.
You should have relevant experience in the substance misuse field and hold a relevant qualification, such as:
- A degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work or a related subject or
- Diploma in Adult Care or equivalent
- Level 3 Tackling Substance Misuse qualification or equivalent
Newly qualified Social Workers are welcome to apply — we support the ASYE programme.
You’ll need to be confident working with people who may have complex needs, able to build trusting relationships quickly and comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
The service operates 7 days a week, from 8am to 8pm, so you’ll need to be willing to work on a rota basis.
What we offer
In return for your commitment, ADS offers:
- Salary: £26,682 – £32,559, depending on experience
- 29 days’ annual leave, rising to 31 days after 2 years and 34 days after 5 years, plus Public Holidays
- Attractive pension package, including a 6% employer contribution
- Health Scheme
- Training and development opportunities aligned to your personalised learning and development plan
- Enhanced sick pay
- The opportunity to join ADS at an exciting time of fast-growing change and development

ADS is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity. We promote the fair and equal treatment of potential and existing employees and service users.
The Alcohol & Drug Service is a charity (Registered Charity 1108595; and a Company Limited by Guarantee, Company No. 05375809). The majority of our funding comes through contracts with statutory commissioners such as Local Authorities and the NHS, but we receive valuable income from charitable grants and individual fundraising efforts which supports many of our most innovative services. We are governed by a Board of Trustees.
We ensure that the organisation is run well and we are a part of the Investors in People scheme, a quality framework which is independently audited. We currently hold the Silver award.
But, even though we’ve been transforming the lives of people affected by drugs or alcohol misuse for over 30 years, some people may not have heard of us. This is because we always work in partnership – and often deliver our services and projects which have their own names/identities.
