About the role
Londonium is seeking an experienced Housing Legal Aid Locum Solicitor to support its Legal Aid Housing Department on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will provide practical assistance with Legal Aid casework, file assessment, compliance, supervision and preparation of costs in accordance with relevant Legal Aid Agency (LAA) and Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) standards. This opportunity, expected to involve approximately three or four working days per month . The appointment may be suitable for a solicitor seeking flexible locum work alongside other professional commitments.
Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Manage and use the Legal Aid Portal, including the complete Legal Aid application process and associated procedural steps.
- Assess files and advise on merits, eligibility and suitability for legally aided housing work.
- Prepare and review costs for different areas of Legal Aid housing work.
- Undertake prompt case triage, lead assessment, supervision and appropriate file filtration.
- Maintain effective working relationships with counsel and assist with the acceptance and progression of Legal Aid files.
- Carry out supervision and compliance checks to ensure that files meet applicable LAA and SRA requirements.
- Identify risks, missing information and procedural issues, and recommend appropriate corrective action.
- Support the department in maintaining accurate, compliant and well-organised case files.
Essential experience and qualifications
Applicants should be qualified solicitors with at least five years of practical post-qualification experience in Legal Aid housing work. Candidates must also have:
- Demonstrable experience using the Legal Aid Portal and managing Legal Aid applications from start to finish.
- Strong knowledge of file assessment, merits assessment and Legal Aid eligibility requirements.
- Experience preparing and reviewing Legal Aid costs.
- Practical experience supervising casework and conducting compliance reviews.
- A sound understanding of LAA and SRA standards and regulatory requirements.
- The ability to work independently, exercise sound professional judgement and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication and relationship-management skills, including experience working with counsel.
Desirable experience
Experience working within a Legal Aid practice, supporting housing caseworkers or supervising a housing department would be advantageous. Familiarity with short-term locum assignments and flexible working arrangements is also desirable.
