We are looking for someone to join us in the role of our Packer. Preparing orders for our cheesemongers this role is ideal for someone who is looking for part-time work in the world of artisan cheese.
Role: Cheese Packer
Hours: Part-time, 3 days per week – Monday, Tuesdays and Fridays
Can be flexible on start and finish times to work around school times.
About Trethowan's Dairy:
We are a small family-owned cheesemaker. We started making cheese almost 30 years ago on Todd and Maugan Trethowan’s parents farm in Wales, where we first made our award-winning Gorwydd Caerphilly.
Eleven years ago, we moved the dairy from Wales to a new home in Somerset. Within a few years, we had created a second cheese - Pitchfork Cheddar. Our Pitchfork Cheddar is one of only three cheddars to be recognised and admitted to the Slow Food Presidia for Artisanal Somerset Cheddar.
Our ethos is to stay true to traditional cheesemaking methods, taking time and care to create the best cheeses possible. Both our cheeses continue to win awards, and we are looking to find someone to loving pack our cheeses and ship them off to our customers ready to sell.
The Role:
The successful candidate will be highly organised, detail-oriented and able to adapt to demand. A strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team is also important. The role can also be demanding physically as it will involve moving and handling whole cheeses.
Key Responsibilities:
- Order Fulfilment:
- Pick and pack customer orders according to order specifications and maturity and quality customer specifications.
- Select the correct cheese batches, ensuring they meet customer requirements for age and quality.
- Carefully handle and package cheeses to maintain their integrity during transit.
- Prepare and label orders for dispatch, ensuring all necessary documentation is prepared and issued.
- Stock Monitoring:
- Regularly monitor cheese stock levels to ensure sufficient availability for order fulfilment.
- Implement and maintain a system to minimise cheese wastage through careful stock rotation and management.
- Identify and report any potential stock shortages or quality issues.
- General:
- Maintain a clean and organised work environment.
- Adhere to all food safety and hygiene regulations.
- Undertake any other reasonable tasks as required to support the smooth operation of the dairy.
About you - Experience / Skills and Attributes:
- A keen eye for detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage own workload effectively.
- Excellent communication and ability to work as a team.
- Physical capability to safely lift and handle whole cheddar cheeses weighing up to 25kg on a regular basis.
- Physical ability to undertake demanding work in the cheese make room when providing cover.
- A passion for food and an appreciation for artisan cheese.
- A basic understanding of food hygiene principles (training will be provided if necessary).
- Experience in using cloud-based computer systems and data entry would also be an advantage.
