Weekend Chef
Permanent post working 7.30am to 7.30pm Saturdays and Sundays during term time plus 6 weekends in the summer
At Bootham School we pride ourselves on the high quality and extensive range of our meals. This is not typical school catering! At the weekend our staff and boarders enjoy breakfast, Sunday brunch and evening meals. Saturday lunch caters for around 500 students, parents and staff, and is an opportunity to showcase our culinary skills. During the summer, the school caters for a wide range of visiting groups who hire our facilities.
We are seeking a qualified Weekend Chef, experienced in quality volume food preparation, with a good knowledge of catering for various dietary needs and fully aware of all allergy requirements. You must be able to work in a calm and friendly manner with a busy catering team, and provide excellent customer service to our diverse student population. You must have experience of working with bespoke menus and be able to bring in new ideas for special catering events. You will also undertake food ordering ready for Monday deliveries.

Overall Purpose:
The preparation of all meals on Saturdays and Sundays for students, staff and visitors at Bootham School. Meals include breakfasts, lunches and evening meals on Saturdays and brunch and evening meals on Sundays. Saturday lunch is approx. 500 covers. Sundays are around 130 covers. On a number of weekends throughout the year you will cater for various special events and open days requiring barbeques, buffets, or lighter refreshments.
Key Accountabilities:
To prepare breakfasts, lunches, evening meals, Sunday brunch and catering for special events to the high standards set by the Catering Manager, working with the menus provided.
To complete accurate ordering for Monday food deliveries.
To be responsible for your own working area, keeping it hygienic, tidy and clean at all times.
Skills and Competences required in the role:
- Catering qualifications required are at least C & G 706 level 2 (NVQ level 2 or 3) or equivalent experience in quality catering for large numbers using a production system
- Pastry skills
- Experience in international cuisine and catering for vegetarian diets is preferred
- Conscientious attitude, flexible and easy going personality
- Able to work calmly under pressure, maintaining a good sense of humour in a busy environment
- Able to switch between tasks with ease
Hours of work and salary
Working hours are 7.30am to 7.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays during term time, and for an additional 6 weekends in the summer
After a probationary period of 6 months this is a permanent post
