Deputy Manager – Residential Children’s Home (EBD)
Location: Peterborough
Company: Azalea Care
Pay: £15.50 per hour, increasing to £16.00 per hour following successful completion of probation
Job Type: Full-time
About the Role
Azalea Care is looking for an experienced, motivated and child-focused Deputy Manager to join the management team within our residential children’s home in Peterborough.
Our home supports children and young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD). We are looking for someone who can provide strong leadership while maintaining a warm, safe, structured and nurturing environment for the children in our care.
Working alongside the Registered Manager, you will play a key role in the day-to-day running of the home, supporting the staff team to deliver consistent, high-quality care and positive outcomes for children.
Key Responsibilities
As Deputy Manager, your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the Registered Manager with the effective day-to-day management of the home.
- Providing leadership, guidance and support to Residential Care Workers, Seniors and Team Leaders.
- Leading shifts and supporting the management of challenging or complex situations.
- Promoting a positive, therapeutic and child-centred approach to behaviour management.
- Ensuring children are safeguarded and that their individual needs, risks, care plans and placement plans are understood and followed.
- Supporting children who may display behaviours that challenge, including managing incidents safely and appropriately.
- Completing and reviewing risk assessments, care plans, behaviour support strategies and other key documentation.
- Ensuring incidents, safeguarding concerns and significant events are appropriately recorded, reported and escalated.
- Supporting staff supervision, induction, mentoring, training and ongoing professional development.
- Monitoring staff practice and addressing areas requiring improvement.
- Supporting rotas, staffing arrangements, handovers and the effective deployment of staff.
- Promoting positive relationships with children, families, social workers, education providers and other professionals.
- Supporting audits, quality assurance and continuous service improvement.
- Ensuring the home operates in accordance with the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015, Quality Standards, safeguarding requirements, Ofsted expectations and Azalea Care policies and procedures.
- Deputising for the Registered Manager when required and providing appropriate management oversight in their absence.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare or an equivalent recognised qualification.
- Have relevant experience working within a residential children’s home, preferably supporting children with EBD and complex needs.
- Have experience of leading shifts and supporting or supervising staff.
- Have a strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
- Understand the regulatory requirements and Quality Standards applicable to residential children’s homes.
- Be confident managing challenging behaviour, incidents and safeguarding concerns.
- Have strong leadership, communication and organisational skills.
- Be able to maintain high standards of recording, reporting and professional accountability.
- Be flexible and able to work as part of a residential rota, including evenings, weekends and other shifts as required.
Previous experience as a Deputy Manager, Senior Residential Care Worker, Senior Team Leader or similar leadership role within children’s residential care would be highly desirable.
What We’re Looking For
We want someone who is visible, supportive and actively involved in the home. This is not solely an office-based management position.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead by example, spend meaningful time working alongside the staff team and children, maintain professional standards and help create a culture of consistency, accountability and positive practice.
You should be confident making decisions, supporting staff through difficult situations and challenging poor practice appropriately, while remaining approachable and committed to developing your team.
