Job Purpose
The Site Chargehand supports the Site Supervisor in the day-to-day running of the waste and recycling facility. The role focuses on supervising operational activities on the ground, leading site operatives, and ensuring work is carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements.
The Site Chargehand acts as the first point of contact for site operatives during shifts and plays a key role in maintaining high operational standards, productivity, and site discipline.
Key Responsibilities
· Support the Site Supervisor in coordinating daily site operations, ensuring work activities are completed safely and efficiently.
· Provide day-to-day leadership to site operatives, allocating tasks and monitoring performance on the shop floor.
· Ensure all waste handling, segregation, processing, and storage activities are carried out in line with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
· Carry out routine safety checks and ensure staff comply with health and safety procedures, including the correct use of PPE.
· Assist in monitoring plant, machinery, and equipment, reporting defects, damage, or maintenance requirements to the Site Supervisor.
· Maintain high standards of housekeeping, ensuring the site remains clean, organised, and safe at all times.
· Support the training and induction of new starters and agency staff, ensuring they understand site rules and safe systems of work.
· Assist with the completion of operational records, including waste movements, inspections, and daily check sheets.
· Act as a point of contact for visitors, drivers, and contractors, ensuring site rules are followed.
· Report incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, or environmental issues promptly to the Site Supervisor and assist with investigations where required.
Requirements and Qualifications
· Previous experience working within the waste management, recycling, or a similar industrial environment.
· Experience in a chargehand, team leader, or senior operative role is desirable.
· Good understanding of health, safety, and environmental procedures within an operational site environment.
· Ability to lead by example and communicate effectively with site operatives and management.
· Practical knowledge of plant machinery and site operations is advantageous.
· Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks during busy operational periods.
· Basic IT skills for completing records and reports.
Pay: £14.00 per hour
