Ferring Country Centre is an independent charity which provides a day care service for people with learning disabilities. In addition, our Farm, Dales Farm, is open to the general public seven days a week.
Our Farm Team Leader will be part of a small team caring for the animals on our farm, which currently include sheep, pigs, goats, donkeys, alpacas, Shetland ponies, rabbits, guinea pigs and various species of birds.
You will be responsible for the daily husbandry, feeding, mucking out and grooming of our animals along with the daily upkeep of the farm. The role will also include assisting with routine procedures such as vaccinating animals, ensuring feed and bedding have been ordered, assisting with compliance with health and safety, and animal welfare regulations.
The farm is a visitor attraction and you must feel comfortable and confident in engaging with the public where required.
The Farm Team Leader may, at times, have work experience students and volunteers with them, so some level of supervision may be required.
A DBS check will be required for this role.
Normal hours (up to 37.5 hours per week) will be 7.5 hours per day on weekdays and Saturdays, and 7 hours if working on a Sunday. Days to be discussed, but preferably to include one or both weekend days on a weekly basis.
There is a requirement to work flexibly for the needs of the animals and organisation.
Key responsibilities:
- Liaise with the Animal Welfare Manager to ensure smooth running of the farm
- Unlocking and closing down of the farm.
- Food preparation and feeding out.
- Hoof care of all hooved stock.
- Suitable animal enrichment created and implemented.
- Health checking and administering medication of farm animals.
- General enclosure maintenance.
- Daily cleaning of animal enclosures.
- Coordinate the weekend team, including training and performance management.
- In collaboration with the Animal Welfare Manager, develop a range of income generating events throughout the year.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety and maintain high standards of animal welfare.
- To work with and support volunteers to ensure all needs of the animals are met.
- Any other duties reasonably required by the organisation.
Required skills and experience:
- Relevant qualification such as Animal Management Level 3 or equivalent experience
- Experience of animal care
- An advocate for animal welfare
- Physically fit (able to lift 25kg bag)
- Experience of working independently and as a team in a role
- Good time management skills
- Flexible and enthusiastic
