Summary
The Graduate Design Engineer will support the development and delivery of design, engineering, and manufacturing solutions for high-end, ultra-premium automotive programmes.
Working closely with Lead Project Engineers, Senior Design Engineers, and the wider engineering team, the Graduate Design Engineer will gain hands-on experience in the design and development of vehicle components and systems. The role will provide the opportunity to develop technical skills across the full product development process, from initial concept and packaging through to design, manufacture, testing, and vehicle build.
The successful candidate will be supported and mentored by experienced engineers while progressively taking responsibility for assigned components and modules.
Responsibilities
- Support the design and development of components and modules, balancing performance, weight, cost, manufacturability, and quality requirements.
- Assist with the design of fixtures and tooling required for component manufacture.
- Support the interface between Engineering and Styling teams to ensure design intent is achieved.
- Work under the guidance of the Lead Project Engineer and Senior Design Engineers to deliver project requirements.
- Contribute to the development of new techniques, improved processes, materials, and product solutions.
- Provide technical design support during prototype and production vehicle builds.
- Liaise with suppliers and internal teams including Manufacturing, Engineering, and Purchasing.
- Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, testing, and development activities.
- Develop an understanding of engineering responsibility, including design and release processes.
- Support the design and development of full vehicle interior systems, including:
Fascia
Tunnel
Seating
Restraints
Lower and rear trim
Upper trim
Closure trim
- Develop an understanding of module packaging and vehicle interfaces.
- Produce and update component and tooling drawings under appropriate guidance.
- Support the wider engineering team and contribute to a positive, collaborative working environment.
- Take responsibility for learning and developing technical knowledge
Skills and Experience Required
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Product Design Engineering, or a related discipline.
- An understanding of engineering design principles and manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with 3D CAD software, preferably CATIA V5.
- Basic understanding of Generative Shape Design, Part Design, and Assembly Design, or a willingness to develop these skills.
- Ability to interpret and produce engineering drawings.
- An understanding of component and module packaging.
- Good literacy, numeracy, and IT skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- A willingness to learn and develop new technical skills.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to changing project requirements.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
