Job Overview
The Lead Youth Worker will lead the day-to-day running of Thirsk Youth Club, working directly with young people whilst managing a small team and ensuring we deliver high-quality youth work for around 140 young people per week.
This is a hands-on role focused on building good relationships with young people, delivering engaging activities and support programmes, and creating a safe, inclusive environment where they can develop and thrive.
This role requires someone who can balance being on the ground with young people whilst also managing budgets, safeguarding, compliance, and strategic relationships with local schools and agencies.

We are seeking a passionate and dynamic Lead Youth Worker to inspire and support young people in our community programs. This vital role involves leading a team of youth workers, developing engaging activities, and fostering a safe, inclusive environment where youth can thrive. As a Lead Youth Worker, you will serve as a role model, mentor, and advocate for children and teenagers, helping them build confidence, skills, and positive relationships. Your energetic approach and commitment to youth development will drive impactful programs that make a real difference in young lives.
Responsibilities
- Plan, lead and deliver engaging weekly youth work sessions across age groups 9-18.
- Plan, lead and deliver school-holiday sessions and activities, occasional day trips and residential weekends
- Build good relationships with young people, creating a safe and inclusive environment where they feel welcomed, valued and heard
- Plan, lead and deliver activities/sessions that respond to young people's interests, needs, and development goals, bringing in outside partners, agencies and individuals as appropriate
- Champion youth voice, ensuring young people actively shape what we do and how we do it
- Develop and implement engaging, age-appropriate activities that promote social skills, creativity, and personal growth.
- Foster a safe, welcoming environment where all youth feel valued and supported.
- Mentor youth workers by providing guidance, training opportunities, and constructive feedback.
- Build strong relationships with children and teenagers to understand their needs and support their development.
- Collaborate with community partners, schools, and families to enhance program offerings and outreach efforts.
- Monitor program effectiveness through feedback and evaluations, continuously seeking ways to improve engagement and outcomes.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in youth work or related fields such as teaching or mentoring young people.
- Strong background working with children, including those with special education needs or diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide a team of youth workers.
- Excellent communication skills to connect effectively with young people, families, and community partners.
- Knowledge of best practices in youth development, mentoring techniques, and inclusive education strategies.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining enthusiasm and professionalism.
- Relevant certifications or training in youth work or special education are preferred but not essential.
- Level 3 Safeguarding qualification, or a willingness to work towards it.
- Enhanced DBS clearance (will be required)
