As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will lead the design and development of new Ground Support Equipment while supporting the ongoing improvement of existing products. Working closely with Manufacturing, Production, Purchasing and Quality, you will take technical ownership of projects from initial concept through to production.
Alongside new product development, you will provide engineering support to manufacturing, manage Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), resolve technical issues and ensure all engineering documentation remains accurate and fully controlled throughout the product lifecycle.
You will also support and mentor junior engineers, contribute to engineering best practice and play an active role in improving our products, processes and standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of new Ground Support Equipment from concept through prototype, testing and production.
- Take technical ownership of engineering projects, ensuring delivery to quality, cost and programme requirements.
- Produce and review high-quality 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings and Bills of Materials using Autodesk Inventor.
- Support Manufacturing, Production, Purchasing and Quality with day-to-day engineering activities.
- Investigate manufacturing issues and implement practical, robust engineering solutions.
- Lead Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), updating drawings, Bills of Materials and all associated engineering documentation.
- Maintain engineering data and revision control within Autodesk Vault.
- Carry out engineering calculations and support Finite Element Analysis (FEA) where required.
- Liaise with suppliers regarding technical issues, component selection and manufacturing methods.
- Support prototype builds, product validation and testing activities.
- Identify opportunities for product improvement, standardisation, cost reduction and increased manufacturability.
- Participate in design reviews and support the continual improvement of engineering standards and procedures.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance across the engineering team.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Minimum 7 years' experience in mechanical product design within a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience leading engineering projects from concept through to production.
- Strong proficiency in Autodesk Inventor (or equivalent 3D CAD software).
- Extensive experience producing manufacturing drawings, Bills of Materials and engineering documentation.
- Excellent understanding of fabrication, machining, welding and manufacturing processes.
- Experience supporting manufacturing and resolving production-related engineering issues.
- Experience managing Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and engineering document control.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities within a fast-paced engineering environment.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience using Autodesk Vault or other Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
- Experience carrying out engineering calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Experience in the design and integration of hydraulic systems is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of electrical systems and integration into mobile equipment.
- Experience designing fabricated steel structures and heavy mechanical equipment.
- Background in Aircraft Ground Support Equipment, automotive, defence, off-highway vehicles or special purpose machinery.
- Experience mentoring or supervising engineers.
- Knowledge of Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA) and Lean manufacturing principles.
