Room Leader – Toddler Room (2–3 Years)
Reports to: Nursery Manager / Deputy Manager
Responsible for: Early Years Practitioners, Apprentices and Students within the Toddler Room.
Salary - Negotiable depending on experience
Purpose of the Role
To lead our small Toddler Room, providing exceptional care, learning and nurturing experiences for up to 12 children aged approximately 2–3 years.
As Room Leader, you will create a calm, stimulating and homely environment where children feel safe, secure and excited to learn. You will lead by example, inspiring your team through outstanding practice while building strong, trusting relationships with children and their families.
This is a hands-on role, working directly with the children while taking responsibility for the daily organisation, curriculum and quality of the room.
Main ResponsibilitiesLeadership
- Lead the daily running of the Toddler Room.
- Be an excellent role model, demonstrating outstanding interactions with children.
- Support, coach and motivate colleagues to provide consistently high-quality practice.
- Ensure the room is welcoming, organised and ready for each day.
- Promote a positive, respectful and collaborative team culture.
- Work closely with the Nursery Manager to continually improve practice.
Children's Learning and Development
- Plan and deliver exciting learning experiences based on children's interests.
- Provide an enabling environment that encourages exploration, curiosity and independence.
- Complete high-quality observations, assessments and planning in line with the EYFS.
- Monitor children's progress and identify next steps for learning.
- Support children's communication, language, social and emotional development.
- Encourage independence in self-care, mealtimes and everyday routines.
- Ensure every child feels valued, included and celebrated.
Care and Wellbeing
- Meet each child's individual care needs with warmth and consistency.
- Support children through key transitions, including toilet training where appropriate.
- Promote healthy lifestyles, good hygiene and positive emotional wellbeing.
- Maintain a safe, clean and secure environment.
- Complete daily safety checks and risk assessments.
Safeguarding
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of every child.
- Follow safeguarding procedures and report any concerns immediately.
- Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times.
- Promote children's safety and wellbeing through excellent practice.
Working with Families
- Develop positive, professional relationships with parents and carers.
- Share children's achievements and daily experiences.
- Provide reassurance, advice and support where appropriate.
- Encourage parents to become active partners in their child's learning.
Environment
- Create a calm, beautiful and inspiring learning environment.
- Ensure resources are well presented and easily accessible.
- Adapt the environment to reflect children's interests and developmental needs.
- Take pride in maintaining exceptionally high standards throughout the room.
Professional Responsibilities
- Follow all nursery policies and procedures.
- Attend staff meetings, training and supervision sessions.
- Continue your own professional development.
- Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Level 3 Early Years qualification (or above).
- Previous experience working within a toddler room.
- Good knowledge of child development and the EYFS.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Experience supporting or leading other practitioners.
- Passion for creating exceptional learning experiences.
Desirable
- Previous Room Leader experience.
- Paediatric First Aid.
- Experience supporting children with additional needs.
- Knowledge of schemas, sustained shared thinking and child-led learning.
