Are you looking for a Teaching Assistant role in a specialist setting where you can make a genuine difference to children and young people with additional needs?
We are recruiting a Teaching Assistant to work in a specialist education environment supporting pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Complex Needs and PMLD. This is not a mainstream role — it is a hands-on position supporting pupils with significant and complex needs.
Class sizes are small (no more than 12 students per class), allowing you to provide personalised support and build meaningful relationships with pupils.
The Role
As a Teaching Assistant in this specialist setting, you will support pupils with a wide range of learning, physical and communication needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group classroom support for pupils with complex needs
- Supporting access to learning through adapted and sensory-based activities
- Supporting pupils with complex physical, sensory, communication and emotional needs
- Assisting with personal care where required, including feeding, toileting, hygiene and mobility
- Encouraging engagement, independence and positive behaviour
- Helping maintain a safe, structured and inclusive learning environment
- Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils
This is a specialist Teaching Assistant role, requiring patience, empathy and consistency.
Why Work in a Specialist Setting?
- Gain valuable experience supporting pupils with SLD, complex needs and PMLD
- Work in a setting focused on individual progress rather than academic pressure
- Consistent daytime hours and structured routines
- Small class sizes and strong staff support
- Clear temp-to-perm pathway after 12 weeks
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in education, care, support work, early years, health & social care or similar
- A strong interest in supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities
- Confidence working with pupils with complex needs
- Lived or informal SEN experience is also welcomed
- A calm, patient and adaptable approach
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Full-time availability (8:30am–3:30pm, Monday–Friday)
- Full right to work in the UK (essential – no sponsorship available)
No previous school-based experience is required — transferable skills and the right attitude are key.
