Graduate Teaching Associate – Hockey (Residential)
Reporting to: Director of Hockey / Director of Sport / Deputy Head Pastoral
Location: Wrekin College
Contract Type: Fixed-term (1 academic year), term-time plus pre-season
Accommodation: On-site accommodation provided, with full board during term time
Purpose of the Role
The Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA) – Hockey will support the delivery of hockey across the school while contributing to the wider life of a busy boarding environment. This is an ideal role for a recent graduate seeking experience in coaching, education, and pastoral care. The role combines hockey coaching with broader involvement in sport, academic support, and residential duties.
Key Responsibilities
Coaching & Player Development (Hockey & Wider Sport)
- Assist in delivering a structured hockey programme across all age groups (e.g. U12–1st XI).
- Support coaching sessions, practices, and fixtures for designated hockey teams.
- Contribute to skill development across core areas (passing, receiving, attacking play, defensive structures).
- Assist with performance analysis and provide feedback to pupils.
- Support hockey tours, festivals, and pre-season training.
- Contribute to the coaching and delivery of other sports as required, depending on seasonal needs and the candidate’s experience.
Academic & Classroom Support
- Assist teaching staff in lessons across a range of subjects (as appropriate to graduate’s background humanities and science background preferable).
- Provide one-to-one or small group academic support for pupils.
- Help with supervision of prep (homework) sessions.
- Contribute to a positive and purposeful learning environment.
- Support wider classroom activities and cover where required, demonstrating flexibility across departments.
Boarding & Pastoral Care
- Act as a member of a boarding house team.
- Support the Houseparent in the day-to-day running of the boarding house.
- Undertake evening and weekend duties on a rota basis.
- Provide pastoral care, guidance, and support to pupils.
- Contribute to the co-curricular and social life of the boarding community.
- Assist with additional boarding duties as required, including trips, activities, and supervision.
Programme Support (Sport)
- Assist the Director of Hockey in delivering the school’s hockey philosophy and seasonal planning.
- Support the organisation of fixtures, training schedules, and events.
- Help ensure consistency of coaching and standards across teams.
- Assist with equipment management and pitch preparation.
- Provide support across the wider sports department, contributing to fixtures, events, and programmes beyond hockey.
Administration
- Assist with registers, match reports, and performance tracking.
- Support communication with pupils and staff regarding training and fixtures.
- Help coordinate logistics such as transport, kit, and matchday arrangements.
- Undertake general administrative tasks across sport, boarding, and academic areas as required.
Person SpecificationQualifications & Experience
- A good undergraduate degree (essential).
- Strong hockey playing background (school, club, or university level).
- Coaching experience (desirable but not essential).
- Interest in teaching and/or a career in education or sport.
Skills & Knowledge
- Sound understanding of hockey techniques and tactics.
- Ability to contribute to a range of sports (desirable).
- Ability to engage and motivate young people.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organised, reliable, and adaptable, with a willingness to take on varied responsibilities.
