Job Title: Bar Manager
Location: Chislehurst Golf Club, Camden Place, Chislehurst, Kent
Reports to: Operations Manager
Job Purpose
To take overall responsibility for the effective day-to-day operation and performance of the bars at Chislehurst Golf Club, ensuring consistently high standards of service, presentation, efficiency and member experience across all bar and associated service areas.
The Bar Manager will lead, motivate and develop the bar team, ensuring the Club’s bars operate professionally and efficiently across all trading periods, events and functions. Working closely with the Operations Manager and wider management team, the Bar Manager will contribute to the continued development of the Club’s bar operation, financial performance and overall member experience.
Key Responsibilities
Bar Operations & Service
- Take overall responsibility for the effective day-to-day operation of the Club’s bars, ensuring smooth and efficient service across all areas.
- Ensure each bar is appropriately staffed, prepared and operated according to its trading requirements and the needs of members and guests.
- Lead by example, delivering a professional, friendly and personalised service across the bars.
- Ensure consistently high standards of drinks quality, presentation, cleanliness and hospitality across all bar and service areas.
- Coordinate the operation of the bars to ensure appropriate staffing and resources are available during busy periods, competitions, events and functions.
- Take a hands-on approach during busy periods, supporting the team to maintain service standards.
- Ensure alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are prepared and served in accordance with Club standards and licensing requirements.
- Support food and beverage service where required.
- Oversee opening and closing procedures for the bars, including cash handling, security and reconciliation.
- Ensure effective communication between the bars and wider Club operations.
- Support the successful planning and delivery of Club events, functions, competitions and member activities, including the operation of temporary or additional bar facilities where required.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, motivate and manage the bar team, creating a positive, professional and supportive working environment.
- Provide day-to-day leadership and direction to Bar Supervisors and Bar Assistants across the bars.
- Prepare and manage staff rotas and shift planning to ensure appropriate staffing levels across each bar and trading period.
- Allocate staff effectively between the bars according to operational requirements.
- Assist with recruitment, induction and onboarding of new team members.
- Deliver and coordinate staff training, including service standards, product knowledge, licensing, cash handling, health & safety and Club procedures.
- Set clear expectations and maintain high standards of staff performance, presentation and conduct.
- Provide regular coaching, feedback and support to team members.
- Address performance, attendance and conduct issues appropriately in accordance with Club procedures.
Stock & Commercial Management
- Take responsibility for effective stock control across the bars, including ordering, deliveries, stock rotation, replenishment and cellar/storage organisation.
- Ensure appropriate stock levels are maintained at each bar and that stock is transferred between bars efficiently when required.
- Monitor stock levels, wastage, breakages and discrepancies and take appropriate action.
- Oversee regular stocktakes across the bar operation and investigate significant variances.
- Work with the Operations Manager to monitor bar sales, gross profit, cost of sales and labour costs.
- Ensure effective till operation, cash handling and daily reconciliation procedures across the bars.
- Identify opportunities to increase sales, improve profitability and enhance the member experience.
- Assist with the development and implementation of drinks promotions and product initiatives.
Compliance, Health & Safety
- Ensure the bars operate in accordance with licensing, health & safety and food hygiene requirements.
- Promote responsible alcohol service and ensure all team members understand their responsibilities.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and presentation throughout all bars and associated service areas.
- Ensure Club policies, procedures and service standards are consistently followed across the entire bar operation.
- Ensure incidents, accidents and operational issues are reported and managed appropriately.
- Maintain appropriate records and documentation relating to bar operations where required.
Member Experience
- Build and maintain positive relationships with members and their guests across all bar areas.
- Develop a strong understanding of member expectations and ensure these are reflected in the service provided.
- Ensure consistency of service standards and member experience across the bars.
- Handle member feedback, queries and complaints professionally and promptly, escalating matters to the Operations Manager where appropriate.
- Ensure the bars provide a welcoming, professional and inclusive environment consistent with the standards expected of a private members’ golf club.
- Act as a positive ambassador for Chislehurst Golf Club at all times.
Management & Administration
- Work closely with the Operations Manager to ensure the overall bar operation supports the Club’s wider operational and financial objectives.
- Provide regular feedback to management regarding staffing, stock, service standards, member feedback and operational issues.
- Monitor the performance and effectiveness of the bars and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Assist with the implementation of operational improvements and the ongoing development of the Club’s bar operation.
- Support the successful launch and continued operation of the refurbished Members’ Bar and ensure it is effectively integrated with the Club’s wider bar operation.
- Deputise for the Operations Manager on appropriate bar-related operational matters when required.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the seniority and responsibilities of the role.
Person Specification
Essential
- Previous experience in a supervisory or management role within a bar, hospitality, restaurant, clubhouse or similar environment.
- Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop a team.
- Strong understanding of high-quality customer service and hospitality standards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good organisational and time-management skills.
- Experience of stock control, ordering and cash handling.
- Ability to manage and coordinate a multi-bar operation effectively.
- Ability to work confidently and effectively in a busy hospitality environment.
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem solving.
- Professional appearance and conduct at all times.
- Ability to work flexibly, including evenings, weekends and Club events.
Desirable
- Personal Licence.
- WSET Level 2 or equivalent drinks/product knowledge.
- Experience of cellar management - brewery certification preferred.
- Experience of staff rota planning and labour cost management.
- Experience of stocktake and gross profit management.
- Previous experience within a private members’ club, golf club or similar environment.
Working Hours
- Full-time, 40 hours per week.
- 5 days out of 7 on a rota basis.
- The clubhouse operates seven days per week, typically between 7:00am and midnight.
- Evening, weekend and bank holiday work will be required.
- Additional flexibility may be required for major Club events and functions.
- The Club is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Pay: £29,000.00-£32,000.00 per year
