Learning Mentor – Primary & Secondary

This is a specialist education setting in Plymouth providing alternative provision for primary and secondary pupils who may have experienced challenges in mainstream education. The school offers a safe, nurturing, and structured environment where pupils can re-engage with learning, develop resilience, and build positive relationships.
The Role
As a Learning Mentor, you will support pupils across primary and secondary age ranges to overcome barriers to learning and thrive academically and personally. You will build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a positive role model while providing one-to-one and small group support. Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff, you will help to create strategies that improve attendance, engagement, and progress.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils on a one-to-one and small group basis with learning and wellbeing.
- Help pupils develop confidence, self-esteem, and positive behaviour strategies.
- Assist teaching staff in maintaining a calm and purposeful classroom environment.
- Act as a key adult for identified pupils, providing mentoring and guidance.
- Liaise with families, external agencies, and other professionals where appropriate.
- Encourage pupils to take responsibility for their learning, supporting improvements in attendance and engagement.
- Contribute to enrichment activities, trips, and extra-curricular programmes, including activities suitable for both primary and secondary pupils.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Experience of working with young people (ideally in an educational or youth work setting).
- A genuine passion for supporting children with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to remain calm, consistent, and resilient when faced with challenging behaviour.
- A flexible, team-oriented approach.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
Desirable:
- Experience in a school, alternative provision, or SEMH/SEND environment.
- Knowledge of strategies to support young people with additional needs.
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Youth Work, or equivalent).
