Electrical Engineer – Switchgear & Power Distribution
Location: Boldon Area - South Tyneside
Salary: £30,000–£35,000 per year, depending on experience
Job Type: Full-Time | Permanent
Design. Develop. Progress.
Are you an Electrical Engineer with experience in switchgear, control panels or low-voltage power distribution?
Are you confident reading electrical schematics and working with electrical design and CAD drawings?
If so, this could be an excellent opportunity to join an established and growing engineering business specialising in bespoke electrical power distribution, switchgear and control systems.
We’re looking for a motivated and technically minded Electrical Engineer to join a supportive engineering team, working on varied projects from initial design and specification through to manufacture.
This is a hands-on engineering role where your electrical knowledge will be just as important as your design and CAD skills.
The Opportunity
Working within a busy engineering environment, you’ll be involved in the design and development of bespoke electrical systems, including LV switchgear, distribution boards, control panels and associated electrical equipment.
You’ll work closely with engineering, production and project teams to ensure designs are technically accurate, practical and suitable for manufacture.
This is a great opportunity for an Electrical Engineer looking to build on their experience within switchgear and power distribution, while developing their technical and design skills in a growing business.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop electrical systems for bespoke switchgear and power distribution projects.
- Produce and modify electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and panel layout drawings using AutoCAD.
- Interpret customer specifications, technical requirements and electrical standards.
- Develop electrical designs for low-voltage switchgear, control panels and distribution systems.
- Produce accurate manufacturing drawing packs, including Bills of Materials and parts lists.
- Read and produce electrical schematics, single-line diagrams and interconnection drawings.
- Select appropriate electrical components and equipment in line with project requirements.
- Work closely with production and engineering teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
- Support the testing, development and improvement of electrical systems.
- Assist with technical queries from customers, suppliers and internal teams.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure designs and documentation meet relevant industry standards and customer specifications.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and the development of standard engineering processes.
About You
We’re looking for an Electrical Engineer who combines solid electrical knowledge with a practical approach to design and engineering.
You’ll ideally have:
- Experience within an electrical engineering or electrical design environment – essential.
- Experience or knowledge of switchgear, control panels or low-voltage power distribution – highly desirable.
- Good understanding of electrical systems, protection, distribution and control.
- Ability to confidently read and interpret electrical schematics and single-line diagrams.
- Experience using AutoCAD – essential.
- Experience producing electrical drawings and technical documentation.
- Experience within an engineering, manufacturing, switchgear or electrical systems environment.
- ONC, HNC or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience with SolidWorks would be advantageous.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineering and production teams.
- A practical, problem-solving mindset with a willingness to learn and develop.
Switchgear experience would be a major advantage, particularly experience with LV switchboards, distribution systems, MCCs, control panels or similar electrical assemblies.
What’s in It for You?
- £30,000–£35,000 salary, depending on experience.
- Early finish every Friday.
- 26 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays.
- Company pension scheme.
- Private healthcare.
- Free on-site parking.
- Company events.
- Varied and technically interesting electrical engineering projects.
- Supportive and collaborative engineering environment.
- Long-term career development within a stable and growing business.
